If I am not mistaken, players are allowed to talk to other clubs when they are in their last 6 months of their contract.

So wont apply to sterling

Is there not a different rule for U21s can they talk to other clubs in their final year, honestly don't know just asking the question as another poster mentioned sterling was only going to buy out a year of his contract leaving him in his final year...

I think I remember Whenger making some snide comment that Sagna wouldn't sign a new contract because he'd spoken to us. In true Whenger fashion he forgot to mention that (as others on here have said) he could speak to anyone he liked and sign pre-contract agreements if he wanted to from the 1st of January. So no, we didn't "tap him up".

If we're not we bloody well ought to be. As you said every other team does it. I'm so fucking sick of Chelsea getting top players quickly and efficiently while we seem to procrastinate and fuck around only to end up with someone pretty fucking average at the end of it all. This season has shown we need to develop a ruthless streak, tread on some toes, pay off some dodgy agents and gazump some other teams 'nailed on' signings. Fuck everyone, we are City. Get fucking Bale, Pogba, Sterling, De Bruyne and wind up dickwad Mourinho through the media, let him make a prick of himself under pressure. Really? That's a bit of a restriction of trade isn't it?

Even if that's the rules I doubt the players and other interested club abide by them, there will always be some sort of loophole.

I am hoping we can get Sterling in as one of our first signings.

My understanding is they can talk to anyone from any club from January 1st. They can sign with any team not in the same league as their current team from January 1st but cannot sign for a team in the same league until their current contract runs out.

So in theory Milner could Sign a pre contract with Inter now but couldn't do that with Arsenal/ Liverpool.

I may be wrong but I'm sure I've read that somewhere.

I don't even think this will be a saga in the summer, I think this deal will be completed quite early. Liverpool know he's going and will let him go for a decent fee, no way will they risk Sterling only having one year left.

I think that already started with the smoking videos being leaked to the press.

The timing of those videos being released was very suspicious, a week or two after Sterling's BBC interview which Liverpool clearly didn't approve of.

Rodger's comments about Liverpool being bigger than City came across as a snide dig to Sterling, a very bitter comment about a transfer which I think is well underway.

I very much doubt Liverpool will allow Sterling to run his contract down until he has one year left, he has no desire to stay, so a sale this summer is inevitable IMO. Especially when Liverpool are struggling with FFP, no CL football next season ether.

It's clear we've spoken to Sterling, I'd be surprised if terms with the player aren't close to being agreed already.
