Raising the pension age to 75

The Office for National Statistics puts UK life expectancy at 79.2 years for men and 82.9 years for women

Not living that much longer than the proposed retirement age

In scotland it is 77 for men.
Interestingly, or not, the next two primes are 79 and 83.

Or, how about just making women work longer then?

Seems fair.

I thought all of the talk of a pensions crisis was due to the baby boomer generation hitting retirement age. There are a lot more of them than other generations so there's an imbalance of people working to people claiming a pension. Surely once they die out, the demographics will be more equal again and there'll be no crisis?

Why does it have to be 70 or 75?
Why always multiples of 5? Boring.
I like that it's currently a prime number, 67. So why not 71 or 73?
Anyway, back to the politics, I think it's inevitable. We are living longer and it costs a fortune to care for us.
Someone/something has to pay for it.
Just a random round number to see what he can get away with?

See all them old fuckers asleep in the House of Lords

Does my head in.....how much do they get?

I'm not a fan of the house of Lords but they are not all asleep, they do look like it, but the way they sit with their head to one side is so they can listen to the speakers positioned in the grills in the seating. I have been in the HoL and whilst it is not a vast chamber if you are in the strangers gallery you struggle to hear the debate. The speakers in the grills allow everyone to hear what is said. It is the same in the HoC, they have speakers in the grills too and if you are in the strangers gallery there you hear virtually nothing unless the people speaking actually shout.

If anything it shows the archaic nature of Parliament, modern parliament buildings will have headphones etc so you can hear.

I think the raising of the pension age is a direct consequence of BREXIT in that immigration will be lower. We have needed immigration to keep the pension age low because of the falling birth rates in this country. According to the ONS the birth rate has fallen to 1.76, if it falls below 2 then population declines. That of course will mean less people working to pay the pensions of the retired. It is one of those unforeseen consequences off falling immigration that people will have to work longer. If you voted for BREXIT to keep immigration down then I am afraid this is what happens. In effect you voted to work longer.

The other problem is that if the birth rate continues to fall, then it may lead to even higher pension ages in the long run as the number of people paying the taxes needed to fund the pensions falls and those in work face higher taxes to pay for those who have retired or those who are about to retire have to work longer.

We all want our cake and eat it, but in this case it is fiscal suicide, because we either accept lower pensions or accept working longer. Or we accept that immigration is needed to fund the gap.
