I apologise in advance to anyone upset by this post. Scottish football is a total irrelevance. The trophies won up there mean nothing to anyone outside of Scotland. Rangers & Celtic have huge support and despite that have no money. Unless they find a way into our league (which appears impossible) they will never achieve anything meaningful again.
They appear in European finals which is something English clubs (other than the big 4) don't do.

Middlesborough did, very recently - and they were about as good as Rangers were in their final. Celtic over-achieved under O'Neill who is capable of getting that from players. But surely the point is they're both going backwards? That league is tedious beyond belief. The only way they can improve is by playing better teams more regularly, you don't learn anything by thrashing Hamilton Accies and Falkirk.

Boro got beat 4-0 so they didn't do as well as Rangers & it could be said they over achieved aswell.
As far as i can find Everton got to the last final nearly 20yrs before boro so the old firm if you count Europe as the barometer for success are better than all the other prem teams.

Ok take your point, although neither of them won in their recent finals so it's hardly success? Also bear in mind, you have to be 'in it to win it', and they're both guaranteed at least Uefa cup every year. And then, since it's the only decent competition they are in, they give it everything. Contrast that to Villa/Spurs who couldn't even be bothered to field a decent side in the Uefa knock-out stage because they have other fish to fry. I'm not a hater of Scots football, my mate is a Motherwell fan, just being realistic. They need to change. In this money-driven game today, they struggle to generate income and are both in decline.

Re: RANGERS

Half the matchday going public in Scotland are OF fans. A 2 team league has no appeal, very few neutrals want to watch it = less TV money, less sponsorship, poorer quality football = even fewer people want to watch it, less European prize money = less TV money, sponsorship etc. They are leeching all the life out of the SPL, slowly, something has to change. And yes it should be an irrelevance to most of you, although it's obviously not considering the amount of threads that pop up about it.

All valid points. I think the reason it's of some interest to us all is that Rangers/Celtic both have huge support. We respect that. But as for the football, well, I have Setanta and can't be bothered to watch the Scots games. As you say they need a plan to change or they will decline.

Villa played a strong team in the 1st leg but they didn't fancy getting through after seeing what they was up against in the away leg.
The spuds were going out no matter what team they played & Everton & Pompey both played strong teams but got knocked out.
Point taken about the being in Europe every season bit but they have a really good record against English clubs other than the top 4.

The only way i can see it changing is if they are invited into the English game at some level.
I like football so the rangers/celtic history is something i find interesting.
