Ref Watch City Games - 2023/24

On the Stones injury - due to the fact that he was injured making a challenge he didn't need to make - This won't go down well but if the players are telling the linesman to have the courage of his conviction and flag for an obvious offside then the City defender should also have the courage to know it was offside and not make the tackle.
It was fucking close tbf, wasn’t as blatant as some are making out and Stones did what all good professionals should do and play to the whistle.
It’s a pretty harsh assessment you’ve made.

No, the basic rule in football is you play to the whistle , too many posters insinuating that the injury was johns fault

Well that’s just fucking stupid!!
Who in the name of God would DELIBERATELY handle a football in the area knowing full well what the consequences are??????!!!!!
The argument for a penalty has to be did the handball stop a potential shot on goal or a goal scoring opportunity (which was definitely the case yesterday)
I do seriously worry about people’s iq…..
It’s just simple common sense.
I do understand your point of view but, querying the IQ of a player who would deliberately give away a penalty can be challenged. I cannot remember the player involved or even the match however, said player who was on the goal-line clearly punched the ball away. A penalty was awarded and the player was sent off. Going down the tunnel, the offending player stopped, turned, and watch as the penalty was missed.

The point I was making is;- you can't have it both ways i.e. moan at the lino for not having the balls then moan because you didn't have them either.

Suarez did that in the World Cup against Ghana.

Uruguay went on to win the match, and he was delighted with his afternoon's work.

I wasn’t querying players iq (although one definitely could in some cases!) it was the officials and predominantly the commentators and journos who don’t seem to understand the concept that handball with your arms outstretched can prevent goals from being scored!!
Deliberately or not.

Completely agree that if it prevents a goal, I wouldn't be too concerned about deliberate, or even if it's that far from the body.

The one last night is tricky, as it doesn't look like his hand deviates the ball's path much, and it then hits him in the face, so I doubt it would have been a goal, and arguably his hand isn't away from his body at all.

I suggest you watch it again, then. His arm is raised it hits the underside of his arm and deflects on to his side. I'd say that is some deflection from a shot heading goalwards.

Now I wonder why I didn't watch it again before commenting.

Oh. I did ;)

Watch the very first replay after it's awarded on Amazon Prime. The camera is face on to the goal, and it hits him full on in the face, with hardly any deviation. It then deflects off his face down on to his body, and that's what you see from the side view. I think the assistant gives it because they're looking side on.

It's one that I wouldn't have complaints if it was given against us, but if it wasn't given on field I doubt it would have been overturned.

Re that penalty last night; in my opinion, that sort of incident shouldn't (not "wasn't") be a penalty, as I'm pretty sure (though only the defender will know for definite) it wasn't intentional. However; under the current laws re making your silhouette bigger, it is a penalty. The decision was correct in law. If you want to debate whether the law is correct, I wouldn't be unsympathetic to that view. And I'm pretty sure, without anything springing to mind, that we've been on the other end of such a call. We move on.
