Referees’ Performances 2018/19

Yep, we did on the whole. Personally I thought he just got a lot wrong both ways. Foden didn't get booked for preventing a counter attack, Fernandinho seems to have a free pass for his first three bookable offences in every game he plays and Bernardo took two swipes at Rose nowhere near the ball but got away with them because he somehow missed Rose completely. And then the booking you refer to was Wanyama who had just got on the pitch and was booked for his first foul which was Fernandinho going over an outstretched leg. So in terms of bookings dished out there were plenty both ways that could or should have been yellows and the only one he gave was a far lesser offence.

The only other bookings were for the Vertonghen / Sterling handbags, right at the end that wasted a couple of minutes of the 5 additional. But the ref added 20 seconds to make up for that...

I thought it was a generally poor performance by a ref that seems to be highly rated and yet appears to bottle making decisions.

Rose has admitted to suffering from depression. Referring to that to being a basket case is just wrong and that kind of comment contributes to the ongoing stigma around mental illness, a stigma that destroys lives and results in suicide being the most common cause of death for men aged 20-49 in the UK. This reply has nothing to do with club affiliation or Rose specifically but I would ask that you consider this kind of post in the future :-)

You are right, I should not have written or said this.

However the way he plays suggests he also has anger issues to me.

Yesterday he came on the pitch and basically went looking for trouble. He 'offered' fernandinho out, to sort whatever out in the tunnel.

I hear he does not even like football.

On a slightly different note.
What on earth is happening with Danny Rose?
I know he's had some personal issues, but his body language appears permanently angry, not dissimilar to Balotelli on a bad day
Yesterday he just seemed to be looking for a fight

He's always had that edge about him. Most of the time he is just combative but fair but every now and then he allows himself to get wound up. I don't think it helped that Bernardo left a few niggly fouls on him yesterday (and in one case booted Rose then threw himself to the floor claiming a foul!): he seems to enjoy purely physical battles but doesn't like it when his opponent dishes it out but screams every time he touches them. Almost like he then decides to give them a reason to scream.

I really like him when he is just giving his all but he does go too far at times, plus I hate it when he does things like holding his face when he wasn't touched (I cringed on Wednesday when he did that). He's a bit of an enigma really: can be fantastic then occasionally a liability; sometimes chats and jokes with opposition but can get wound up.

Probably because of that he's not well liked by opposition fans and I think he gets a lot of comments and abuse from the crowd that winds him up. It does seem to happen more often when we are playing away.

Is it possible that Oliver may be suffering from some kind of problem? His actions and inactions yesterday were most strange. I mean this quite seriously. It was, probably, the worst performance I have ever seen by a referee.

Maybe he just didn't know what to do, as he hates BOTH fucking sides ;-)

Probably because one changed the result and the other didn't and there are a lot of Liverpool online and in the media that are desperate for their lot to take the title so will alter the narrative to make Liverpool sound hard done by. Always the victims! (why I wasn't overly disappointed with losing yesterday as I would prefer you take the title - as long as we get top 4!)

If we had equalised there would have been a lot more noise about decisions not given in your favour. I thought they either both were penalties or neither were. Neither of the players could have done anything to prevent the contact on their arms: Toby had his weight on his arm in standing up with no idea where the ball was and Walker had no time to react to get his arm out of the way. But the handball rule seems to be made up for every match so I've no idea how a PL ref was supposed to interpret them.
At last a sensible opinion. Neither were penalties in my opinion, whereas the swipe on Silva was. However as you say the laws of the game seem to change each week dependent on who is playing and nobody has any clue anymore

Bernardo took a swipe at rose and then rose elbowed him off him, so that's why bernardo fell to the ground. Six of one because they were both at it, but bernardo definitely didn't throw himself to the ground.

Wouldn't argue with that (or most of the rest of your post), we certainly should have had a penalty though, and that would have (probably) put us 2 up.

I'd agree with that. It could well have then led to the thumping that I was expecting going into the match.

No problem, good of you to take it constructively :-)

He may well have anger issues, possibly interlinked with his depression but any of us would just be speculating. First and foremost he is a human that doesn't seem to have had an easy time of it, being a very well paid footballer is secondary to that. I suspect he really enjoys football but struggles with the baggage that comes along with it: he's referred openly to the racism and lack of action by the authorities but also the whole celebrity/social media side of things: he is just a straight talking Yorkshireman that has received a lot of criticism for being honest in interviews.

From everything I've seen and heard I really like him as a person.

As an aside, Fernandinho is a nasty, cynical piece of work that gets away with it time and time again. If I had to watch him boot my mates around from the touchline with no protection from the ref I'd be wound up by it!! But I'm just a human being that definitely isn't a professional footballer ;-)

.

Now I see Fernandinho as being a top class defensive midfielder who can also play.

He is definitely both of those things.

He's also a cynical, nasty piece of work that gets a free pass from refs game after game. They aren't mutually exclusive ;-)

Chances are it is because he has so much football intelligence that he manages all of those aspects to his game as he knows what he can get away with. Doesn't make it any less frustrating when opposition players get booked for far less.

For me, his favoured treatment by refs is up there with Scholes and his infamous horror tackles that were always excused on the basis that it was a standing joke that he couldn't tackle. That doesn't excuse it: just because refs expect them to play like that doesn't mean they shouldn't be punished fairly. Scholes should have had far more red cards and Fernandinho should have got far more yellows.

I think you have Ali mixed up with Ferdy when you are talking about nasty pieces of work.

I was with you up to your last paragraph, reckless tackles are few and far between with Fernandinho, I could probably count on one hand the number he's been guilt of since he signed. Dark arts, that's his forte.
