Referees’ Performances | 2024/2025

Yes, ref's make mistakes but what I don't understandand about the situation was why didn't VAR review the incident for a potential penalty. I know they can't look at the issuing of the 2nd yellow but surely that's a foul in the box on Rico.
That was my thought too. VAR should have intervened and told the ref to check the monitor for a foul in the box

Hughes going down to stop City’s momentum with a head injury is the worse and most despicable form of cheating. He knew the ref would have to stop the game then made remarkable recovery without treatment Something else that needs to be clamped down on and it’s simple, if play is stop the player should have to go off for a concussion check
It’s a complete piss take with players abusing the head injury rules to stop play.
It would be revealing to see how often players go down with head injuries when their team is on the attack & how often it happens when the opposition are on the attack. Think we know the answer to this already.
I posted the below in a previous thread about this issue.

‘Maybe change the rules so that when a player goes down holding his head & the ref has to stop the game to check on the player, then the clubs physio automatically has to go & check on the player too. This would mean the ‘injured’ player then has to go off the pitch & has to wait to be called back on by the ref like any other time a player needs the physio.
I think this would stop the players faking as much as they do at the moment without any consequences to break up play.
It would also mean genuinely injured players would see the physio on the pitch that much quicker too.
If the players had no choice but to go off the pitch every time, then over time, maybe we would see less players faking head injuries.’

Really, the refs should be able to see the faking

Poorest over seen for a long time, and how big a statement that is! Not just the referee, the whole lot.

Didn't give a blatant offside and let play go on for a corner which they then scored from. Yes our fault for poor marking and not competing, but poor call that heavily influenced the game as surely you bring it back for offside, not play on and give the corner.

Linesman constantly waiting for the ref before indicating which way a thrown in was. What was that all about?

The referee seemed to be trying to man mark our spare player in the middle, constantly in the way and blocking passing lanes better than any palace player. I think if we'd got a penalty he'd have stood in front of the penalty spot for it. Clueless.

Allowed significant time wasting from palace and not a sign of a booking. Allowed palace players to push and shove us all over the place, Nunes literally got shoved over by the corner flag with two hands and he had no interest.

Then the red card. Pathetic, but ok we all get things wrong but where the var? Should have been a penalty check, and var should have been able to ask the referee to review his decision because it was just plain wrong. We suffer now because of it. I can only think var wasn't working today as the alternative is more sinister.

Not the reason we didn't didn't win, but an utterly inept performance where he treated two teams very differently and certainly contributed to the draw.

.

This was exactly my view.
It could have been an easy fix for var to get the ref to look at the monitor for a possible penalty. The ref would have seen it was a pen, not a second yellow, overturned his decision & given a penalty.
I think it’s inexcusable for var to have done nothing.
This is one of the many, many, many issues with VAR, once the referee has issued a yellow card they can't look at it and overturn it.
In your scenario, the ref would have issued a second yellow and then a red to Lewis, the VAR team would have looked and said there's a possible penalty here you need to review it. Ref goes to the monitor sees he's given the foul the wrong way, issues a yellow and awards the penalty but Lewis still has to leave the pitch as VAR can't change yellow card decisions as far as I know.
We had a similar situation a couple of seasons ago against United. Casemiro goes in two footed on a City player but then rolls around on the floor like he's been shot, the ref obligingly issued a yellow to the City player that was actually fouled and gave United the free kick. Then VAR tell him to delay the restart as they're reviewing a possible red card offence from Casemiro for violent play. At this point the referee knows he's fucked up but the yellow card to the City player and free kick to United stand after and the review, as VAR are only checking the possible red card for Casemiro and nothing else, so Casemiro ends up with no card at all and a free kick as a reward for screaming and rolling about.

Agreed also any player getting treatment for cramp from another player should also leave the pitch Arsenal players seem to suffer more than any, when they have a lead though
