RIP Pele (p9)

For someone of my 60s vintage, he was as much a mystical figure as he was a magical player. Those grainy images of 1970 and satellite commentary made it seem all the more exotic and added to his footballing god-like status, memories that have never faded. May he rest in peace.
 
Very sad news. I hope he lived his final hours in peace. Always came across to me as very humble considering all he achieved. Rest in Peace
 
I was 13 for the 1970 World Cup, and that Brazilian team was just something else.

Pele had a fantastic tournament he couldn't believe Gordon Banks saved that header.

Whether he was the GOAT thats for others to decide, I know I loved watching him and that team play football, that was on a different level.

RIP Pele and may perpetual light shine upon you.

Before sky and all the others were a thing the world cup of 1970 was broadcast on what is now known as terrestrial tv.
The brilliant sunshine and the fierce heat could almost be felt in our living rooms as the images fizzed and crackled on the screen.
Amidst all this atmosphere there was a team playing 'Samba' football. This team contained players with peculiar exotic names.
Jairzinho (who scored in every game) Rivelino, Carlos Alberto and the rest.
Amongst all those footballing maestros, one name was elevated to an even higher, more reverential plane, his name was of course Pelé.
Whenever he took to the pitch the crowd expected something unusual, special, to happen and rarely, if ever, did he fail to provide such a moment.
And so, tonight, with my nightcap in hand and a tear in my eye, I will be reflecting on the 1970 World Cup, Gordon Banks astonishing save, the 'Samba' football and Peié - quite possibly the greatest footballer the world ever saw.
R.I.P. Legend.
 
That video shows how good he was - in the dark ages when South American footballers were an unseen mystery until the world cup came round every 4 years. It was mysterious until 1978 in Argentina, then Ardilles and co started turning up in increasing numbers over the decades, and now, there's no mystery left. Even 1982 when Socrates and then Zico played it was always thrilling to see how great they were on the ball. 1986 - Maradonna emerged to greatness. The last of the truly great hidden talents.

Happy days. Pele can put his jumpers down for the heavenly goalposts now. R.I.P. to not only a footballimg great, but a sporting gentleman and superstar.

It's sad, yes, but we will all pass sooner or later.

He was a brilliant footballer obviously, and one of my first memories of WC football.

It's very hard to compare to our modern day football, given the difference in equipment, but people talk about Messi/Mbappe/Neynar and try to compare, but how can anyone ?

Yep my first as an 8 year old, it was magical.
