Nope.Pep says always look to play another player in if he has an easier opportunity to score.its why so many of our classic team goals end up with a player completely unmarked, simply rolling the ball into the net.I read about his instruction in the first few months of his time here, and have watched so many brilliant examples of it since...think stoke city away 1st season as one of many many examples.that has been drilled into the forward players.Mahrez, for whatever reason, has not yet picked up the mantra.

Pep Confidential contradicts your quote but that is by the bye
If you dont think Mahrez has contributed with close in assistance then you either have a short (or selective) memory

I wont be able to find the quote which backs up my opinion ..not clever enough to cut and paste or whatever its called...i cant really advance my argument any further.i,ll leave it for other posters to comment upon.
Just looking at the passage of play posted above,if you stop the footage at 21 seconds, mahrez has two clear options...pass to the right to put sergio in on goal on his right foot,or slip sterling in wide left behind the last defender, again through for a point blank finish.he decides to shoot..but from a near central posistion ,elects to guide the ball into the smallest possible target for a left footer..and misses..instead of smashing the ball to the into a gaping goal ,back across the keeper to the right.
Imo he got it all wrong.

I think we have hogged this thread for too long now, we will simply have to agree to disagree

There is no line, it’s about decision making and choosing the right option. In this instance there was a player in a better position, he chose to shoot instead of playing Sterling in. Against Leicester, when Sane went through and tried to square it, there was nobody in a better position than him, he should have shot but he made the wrong choice. Sterling and Sane both make wrong decisions but with them I feel it’s just a bad decision, whereas with Mahrez I don’t believe he even considers passing.
That's what I can't understand, to me that's bias.

He has the most assists in the CL this campaign. The only player in the PL to have double digit goals and assists multiple times the past 3/4 seasons. How he has suddenly developed this "greedy bastard" tag I don't know. He backs himself more often than not, some see that as a huge plus when it's Sané.

If he had passed to Sterling and he missed, some would bemoan that he didn't shoot. Like Silva at Wembley when he passed it 2 yarss from goal.

Fair points.

The pass was on and probably the better option after such a fantastic move. Could understand him shooting though as it had opened up perfectly for someone with a great left foot to bend it in. The problem was(and rather sums up his first few months) the shot was bloody awful. The replay showed it wasn't particularly close.

The other major problem and most surprising thing about him for me is the amount of times we get him one on one with a defender 20 yards from the byline and he doesn't beat or often hasn't even attempted to beat his man. I wasn't expecting great work rate from him or tackling but I thought in our team we'd get him in areas where blistering pace wasn't needed and his skill would excel in beating people or making half a yard. If that side of his game doesn't start to happen or show up it's difficult to see what he can add or how he can become a success for us.

Still early days imo.

I agree with almost all of this.

Work rate should be much easier to inculcate than talent or complex tactics so hopefully this will follow. To be fair, I did notice him defending deep on one occasion yesterday. Kun too. You wouldn’t have seen that from Kun a couple of years ago.
