The season ticket argument is not without merit but I'm struggling to see why he would invite ridicule upon his club if they failed. Perhaps he realises that RVP wants to come to us and it is merely a tool to drive the price up, or perhaps the opposite is true and he's marking his territory.
Make no mistake this next season will define the future bragging rights for the next decade between our two clubs and he knows it. They win it and they can keep up, we win it and they're fucked for a whole series of reasons.
Interesting times.
I posted on here a couple of days after the still-warming last day of the season match, and I was of the view that the rags (and baconface, in particular) would come out fighhting.
History has shown that over the past 20 years when they've been threatened (Blackburn, Arsenal, Chelsea) they go out and spend big. I thought they would this close season, and the £20m spent so far is just a taster.
I reckon he's pinning his own credibility in getting RvP to the swamp, and that he's pretty confident of doing it. I reckon he'll all but match our offer, and hope that history makes up any shortfall.
Why go public? He needs to rally the troops. The players, the fans, the sponsors... they all need a lift. They all need to believe that the rags are still in pitching with the best of them.
I know Tolm laughed off the thought of RvP going to the rags, but I wouldn't be nearly as sure as that.
If they win the tussle, he'll be on braying about how they are still the choice of champions, and if they fail, it'll be a brave effort that couldn't match the ludicrous sums being offered by City.
It's a win-win in his befuddled mind.
It's all very well talking about their history, but don't forget the romance, dear boy. They have lots of it, so I hear.
Romance? Nah.
It's history what pays the bills old chap...
