Strange one Rodri , lovely looking player , but a definite downgrade on Fernandinho , when you think of Fernandinho, he covered every blade of grass , was physical, read the game brilliantly, alway making crucial interceptions, last minute blocks in the box , and a good passer too .
Rodri can do all these things but is a lot slower , not as physical and doesn’t read danger as well it seems .
Fernandinho was the best player in the world in that position for me over the past few seasons , so totally understand it’s hard to get a like for like replacement, but strange thing is , pep seemed to want a different type of player for the system, think back to him nearly signing Jorginho couple years ago , someone who also seemed to be in the Rodri mold.

I think pep in his system , the main thing as the dm you need to be a great passer , the defensive side and phsical capability’s seem to be secondary .

Maybe Rodri will still come good once he’s got a settled defense behind him hopefully next season , but can’t say I’ve been overly impressed with him this season .
Tidy player but jury’s out a little bit .

Rodri at this moment is a downgrade on Gundogan. Him ever being as good as Fern, is not something I am even contemplating.

Genuine question, what makes him very good in his specific position? I can see a good player in him but I personally think he's the wrong profile of player.
Strong, rotates the ball very well, wins his share of challenges and aerially a threat in both boxes would be the main ones. He doesn't score goals or play 40yrd passes, thats not his job.

He's tall, I wouldn't say he's particularly strong. He's good at recycling the ball, defensively though his numbers aren't nearly as good as they should be. Aerially, he wins 1.1 per game in the PL compared to Fernandinho's 2.4 per game last season. Like I said, how do we judge such a player?

By how well defence transitions into attack and attack into defence. He is fine against the cannon fodder, not so special against pace and aggression.

But that's the issue, he's our record signing and we need to try to cover his weaknesses against the top sides. If we had Douglas Luiz in place of him, I don't see how we'd have done any worse this season. Complete misstep of a signing.

I'm not disagreeing. To be fair to the guy the first season is often difficult but i'm not seeing the physicality, drive and pace I would like to see in Ferns replacement. Neat player like Gundo but thats all i'm seeing at the mo.

As everything I would have said in this thread has already been said (mostly in response to criticism of him), I will just say I remain confident Rodri is a great addition to our squad and is just going through the same “first season pelters” that many in our squad received (including David, Yaya, and Vinny).

I think many are are still rightly frustrated with our CL exit, especially in the manner we exited (as am I), and are just placing far too much blame on Rodri and a few other players. Some will likely temper their opinions over the next few weeks; some have questioned Rodri from nearly the beginning so will likely not.

But I think we’ll ultimately look back on him in a similar way that we do Dinho as long as we fully sort out the defence this summer and don’t continue to play systems that prevent forward pressing, as was the case on Saturday (otherwise anyone we put in his role is going to struggle relative to our lofty expectations, as even Dinho has in the past in similar situations; Kante would have struggled on Saturday, to be honest).

I don't understand your point.

So we should only sign players who can do everything themselves? if so then every single player we have ever signed should be out of the door.

Rodri is very good in his specific position, it is Pep's problem/fault that he hasn't put together the team to make it work.

Rodri is "very good in his position" yet "needs players round him with energy" and "a team around him to make it work"?

Fuck me sideways.
