Think it's a bit of a stretch to call him 'world class' at this stage. He certainly has the potential though, just has a few weaknesses he needs to iron out in order to develop to the next level - playing midfield in the Prem is incredibly difficult and pressured. He's still very young.

We paid £60 odd million to bring Rodri to be our DM for the long term so it's not remotely surprising that Pep hasn't made him a CB project.
It's a fair point, but I don't think it will stop Pep if he had fancied him as mainly a Cb.
For 2 games before Rodris injury, it even looked like he was playing with the idea of using them as a partnership

No it wouldn't stop Pep but he'd need a new DM and I would hope that a new centre back with real pace is what he wants.

Agreed on both points.
I do have a feeling that before Laporte's injury and our defence went to shit, ha planned to play more similiarly to how we set-up Sunday, with Rodri dropping back in a three, freeing up the wing-backs.

He often used Busquets and Alonso like this, and the money spent on Cancelo and even Mahrez, who both suits the roles created by this formation, and Rodri himself who is the perfect pivot/cb hybrid, imo it definitely hints at plans for this formation in the future.

Or maybe I put to much thought into a simple tactical tweak lol

He actually did not. Martinez played DM in the first matches and then jumped between DM and IV just as it was needed because of the injury situation. At the beginning of the second season he had his ACL. After that and because of the still lasting injuries of Schweinsteiger and Thiago the transfer of Alonso took place. Martinez then had his comeback in 15/16 when Bayern had Alonso and Vidal and when we had big injury problems in defense.

Martinez played central defender for Bilbao with Bielsa before he was DM with Heynckes.

Argh... Did not want to quote your post but the post you quoted about Javi Martinez...

No worry, I'm here lol

That is interesting, I'm pretty sure it says in his book(Pep confidential) that the first thing he planned to do was use Martinez as one of the centre-backs. I didn't know he played CB under Bielsa, but when he attracted a lot if interest he was certainly touted as a midfielder.

Anyway, I do remember Alonso tucking in as part of a back 3 in the gane at the Etihad when Sergio scored a hattrick.
Is that a role he deployed Alonso often in?
And do you think its something he would be likely to deploy Rodri more often in. I really enjoyed our 3421 on sunday, and really thought it got the best out of our players currently available.

He was on the rebound from our not getting Jorginho. Can't say either are amazing as DM but there seems a shortage of top notch payers able to do all that's demanded .

Tbf, our team has been pretty dysfuctional this season. Our press has been non-existant, and the space between midfield and defence has been enourmous, leaving Rodri in no mans land, forcing him to make decisions in situations where no decision is the right one.

Imo he is a great buy, but one we won't see the best out of yet

In regards to Jorginho, hindsight is a wonderful thing but I have no idea why we even were after him. I think he was a bullet dodged, because if we had introduced him to the team last season I think we would have lost the title. He is not a DM in the traditional sense at all. He's purely a deep-lying playmaker in the Pirlo mould. He would basically be a Gundogan clone, but weaker in the duels and maybe a bit more adventerous in his passing. He is best used in teams that frees up one of their midfielders to play as a sort of roaming ballwinner(allan, kante), and have Jorginho as the designated playmaker a bit deeper to dictate the tempo. Our playmakers plays in front of the pivot

What a load of complete and utter bollocks.

We waited patiently for a year after missing out on Jorginho in order to identify another holding midfielder who we thought could fit the role best. That's quite the opposite of a rebound.

And this is equally daft. People make that argument all the time with fullbacks and other positions. It's more a case of you not watching much football outside of City games.

No, I don't think you are putting too much thought into that. I often refer to the use of a virtual back three where the DM drops in between the CB's as being something Pep loves to do and that I happen to rather like. If Mendy and Cancelo were pulling up trees, you can see that being a great option and one that would allow the likes of Sterling and Mahrez to attack from more central positions and even enable Jesus and Sergio to play together more often.

With Zin and Kyle offering the option to invert the full backs and have proper wingers (particularly Sane), Pep should have a squad that offers him huge tactical flexibility.

Injuries and, perhaps, Cancelo having difficulties settling in have limited Pep's options.
