Rodri's strike comment

How long before players only sign contracts that they only have to play a certain amount of games in season and they get a certain amount of time off after season finishes??

I get that this is a problem for Rodri (who plays every game), but managers (including international managers) need to suck it up and rotate more. Gives younger players a chance to break into first teams.

Sack off the nations league and international friendlies too.

Nations league and international friendlies aren't going to be sacked off and fans of club football also need to accept that a lot of players love playing for their country. When we sign players from other countries we also need to accept that representing your intenational team means different things to people from different countries. People were whingeing about Alvarez playing at the Olympics but they don't understand that for S. American players the Olympics are a huge deal and also why wouldn't a player who has won everything want to complete the set? If you tell a player he shouldn't be doing that then you might well miss out on some of the best players in the world.

The international fixture list should be cut back but realistically international squads will need to come together so that managers get time to work with their squad outside of major tournaments. I say this as someone who doesn't really care much about international football really either.

For me both international AND club football fixture lists need to be leaner. The expansion of the club world cup was totally unnecessary and without real consultation with the players. Pre season tours to far flung places need to be scrapped etc.

You can take the view that clubs ought to build bigger squads and rotate but to me that just encourages big clubs to stockpile even more talent and make the leagues even less competitive. You also put managers in a position of choosing which tournaments are most important when surely you want all competitions to be treated with respect and teams going all out to win?

Surely the answer is that with more games and more revenue you need more players?
Every one of the teams that want to compete for all of the competitions need a squad equivalent to two teams + an allowance for injuries. So around 26, 27 players min. The solution is in the clubs hands to be fair. The required no of players and sufficient rotation. There should also be a limit of international and club games played per season.

the 'Americanisation' of the sport means more games per club, multiple games per week, games every day across competitions, and seasonal competitions such as world club leagues and international stuff regularly. The answer, before trimming games, will be bigger squads. Then we're looking at either (or both) competition-based squads and/or many more subs, in an NFL style rotation.

To reduce the number of games either the players need to take a pay cut or the competitions need to change. A pay cut only works though if it means that the clubs stop chasing every last penny and start to insist on change’s to the competitions.
Some possible changes are:

The Premier League reduced to 18 clubs, as originally intended. The fact it won’t, when it would be in the best interests of everyone in it and the competition itself, is a perfect example of what City called the ‘tyranny of the majority’.

No League Cup for any team already qualified for European competition (might encourage lower half premier league teams to put out a proper team as well).

Those 2 actions alone take 10 games away from any team that gets to the final of the league cup.

Of course, none of that will happen because player greed and corporate greed have entirely taken over the game and self financial interest will win out, as always.

I wonder if they'd knock 1/19th off everyone's season ticket if they did.

Hmm.

Anyone?

Bueller?

Agree with him. Players are playing too much for club and country.

The damp squib of the European Championship showed that. Lots of knackered players expected to perform at the highest level.

I couldn’t give a monkey’s what players earn and think the comments about docking wages is bizarre. Doesn’t everyone want to see these elite athletes at their best or not?

Agreed. The argument isn’t financial, it’s competing at the highest possible level.

If the IAAF demanded athletes competed more than they should, then the Olympics would suffer as a result and times and distances would be far lower than athletes’ best.
