It would have been a very difficult game with Kompany, Yaya, Silva (bit-part at most) and Aguero in the side. I expect the players on the pitch ready to grind out a result with a spirited fighting performance. Let's forget about the beautiful football for 90+ minutes. Even if we are a goal down with 10 minutes to play I will be confident. It'll be a hostile atmosphere and we only need the ref to be up against it.

I'd start to try and control the game and keep a blanc sheet for at least half time for us to grow in to the match. We have better players on the bench and ones that can be used in any sort of circumstances. If fit I'd start with Jovetic as a lone striker. He loves being up against two men on his own and he knows Italian football. Dzeko is better coming on as a sub most of the time anyway.

After the dissapointment of both CSKA-games that should have brought us at least 3 more points at this stage, I said the only thing we need to do is try and be in with a chance in the last game. We are and lets take it.

Hart
Zabaleta
Mangala
Demichelis
Clichy
Fernando
Fernandinho
Lampard
Nasri
Navas
Dzeko

Pretty solid 6 in front of Joe there. Need Lampard for his goal threat and experience in the absence of Aguero, Kompany and Yaya. Need pace to hit them on the break so Navas is in, need to make his crosses effective so Dzeko goes in despite limited playing time - I'm not confident in Jovetic leading the line by himself either.

For me Fernandinho and Nasri are the key here. If they're on I can't see us losing. Think we'll scrape it 2-1, goals to Dzeko and Lampard.

Don't have the time to trawl, however in simple terms, what results leave us in the dreaded Europa League and how likely is it we'll end up 3rd rather than 2nd or 4th.

Is it just a 0-0 and Moscow losing or have I got it totally wrong?

no, you're correct for us to end up in EL csKA need to lose in munchen and we draw 0-0

Also City & CSKA both winning, albeit unlikely

That's a highly plausible result, if you think about it. Fuuuck! If we go out of the CL, I definitely want back to back league titles (which we can certainly do). No faffing about with the Europa League. That's the way I see it, anyway.
On another note - I don't understand people leaving out Jovetic. This game is tailor-made for him.

PS this post's a response to Mihai City's one, not the last post.

Which almost gets me thinking that we might see a tactical own goal to avoid certain permutations that send us to the EL if we know the CL qualification is not going to happen ;-)

We have 10 league fixtures, incl Chelsea away, to play before the EL starts up again in Feb. Hopefully we'll still be in contention for the league in which case we could play the reserves and score the tactical og then. But it could be that we'll be in a similar league position to two years ago. Safe in 2nd but no realistic chance of the league. In which case a EL and FA Cup double would be better than nowt.
