Roughest Place In Manchester?

When did you live there,mate?.I lived behind the Post Office,near the Penny Black,moved out about 83.Like you say there were alot of good people,but also a fair few "Crims".

Worked on that estate alot its full of smackheads now, its a fucking shit tip cars always get robbed, people get mugged.
The streets are filthy.

I came home a couple of years ago with my daughter (she was 3 then), and wanted to have a walk around and show her where i lived,family told me to not even think about it.Shame its gone that bad.

used to live off waterloo rd in cheetham hill and never had any trouble except my car got stolen and burnt out. was only a nissan micra anyway.
always found the people to be friendly and charming.probably the dodgiest places i ventured into were ordsall or openshaw- i didnt spend any great length of time there but always felt a bit more 'on edge' than usual

oh you were way before me mate i was only there in 2003-2005. bet it was alot rougher in your days!i was on barrowhill rd just after the garage.used to love the vibrant atmosphere of cheetham hill rd though

We moved to the Hill from Blackley Village when they knocked down most of the 2 up 2 downs near the ICI building,it was different, to say the least.Everytime i go home the old man makes us go to the Italian restaurant San Rocca,standing outside having a ciggie Cheetham Hill Road still has a certain vibe.

I covered the story of Scuttling and its impact on the formation in "Manchester The Greatest City" (1997) and "Manchester A Football History" (2008). I was disappointed withe The Gangs of Manchester book because it didn't refer to City's formation (as St Mark's) at all, and yet the very existence of the Club ties in with businessmen, the church and others in West Gorton trying to combat the Scuttling that was wrecking their lives.

The Gangs of Manchester is a good book but falls into the usual trap of talking about youth culture and United when it does refer to football, but the much bigger and significant story is of course the City one.

for twenty five years my work has taken me on a weekly basis to all parts of manchester. imo wythenshawe is a lovely place to work. in spring and summer the place looks beautiful with the trees in blossom or leaf. haverley circle used to be a bit rough. benchill in general is wythenshawes worst but the estate is a dream compared to other parts of greater manchester.

the only place anybody has tried to take my car off me is in ordsal twice (unsuccessfully luckily) also got told to leave a street in langworthy as the tenants didn't like me being there, probably thought i was from the dhs and watching who lived where they shouldn't.

I use to live in Duchy and my local was The Langworthy , i'm not suprised by what you say , lol .
I knocked about with a few faces in areas that have been mentioned in this thread . I think it's about who you know and who knows you whether you class an area as being rough .
I've had many a top night in places deemed rough but like previously mentioned , it boils down to familiarity .
I use to booze a lot in The Griffin just past Broughton baths in the early 90's , now that was a rough pub . Am i right in saying it's not there anymore ? Is the Halfway House , top of Cheetham Hill Rd still open ? That was another watering hole full of 'characters' .

I used to play football for the halfway house your right was full of characters in fact hardly any of the lads who played for them would go in for a pint.

It's been closed down for a while now think it's going to become a solicitors (well at least the regulars will be the same :0)

Gorton is rough but it isnt rough nr the nags, thats west gorton. Mount road area of gorton is rough and so is abbey hey in gorton.

Must be a blackley village thing, My wife used to live on Dommet street there and we used to always end up at San Rocco

The Robin Hood in Cheetham Hill is a 'real' pub...........close to it's occupants, a welcoming wink, a lovingly pulled pint, all close to the amenities that make Cheetham Hill such a landmark for everything that's wonderful about Manchester.
