Some of the roughest areas are not in Manchester itself, but around the suburbs. A lot of central Manchester and places nearby, like Moss side, have been the focus of a big clean up and are not as bad as they used to be.
Places like Wythenshawe, Oldham and Hyde have really rough areas now. The thing is that 'rough' these days doesn't mean the same. You used to get a lot of really hard lads in some areas - Brindleheath in Salford and Hattersley are the ones I knew well. But nowadays disaffected children have guns and are prepared to kill people, so your roughest areas are now the ones with most poverty and general social problems - like child abuse and alcoholism.
