No-one's suggesting he was being racist, it's just an injudicious analogy to use to a person with black heritage.

People sometimes overreact to stuff, but words are powerful and as a seemingly intelligent and well read man Hodgson should have considered what he was saying more carefully.

So in a high tension dressing room the manager told a well-known apocryphal story which will have broken the tension by getting the players attention thus giving them a mental break and at the same time offering tactical guidance.

A story which in its origin places the well trained Monkey ahead of the Astronaut and emphasises the importance of the Monkey to the mission. But because the story uses a monkey, just as NASA did, it is deemed racist by some halfwit in the dressing room.

There is NOTHING racist about the story or Hodgson and anyone who feels there is needs to think about the corner they are backing themselves into.

He's apologised because it's the gentlemanly thing to do but he has apologised not for being racist but for causing perceived offence where none was meant.

I certainly don't think he's racist or the comment was inherently racist. It would not have made sense.

Think he just wanted to animate his statement by saying feed the [any animal].

Say monkey to a coloured person and ears will certainly perk, I agree.
