Royal Family abusing their power

I always laugh when people talk about which royal should be the next king. You don't have a choice. That's the point. It could be Prince Joffrey next in line and there's nothing you could do about it.

I'm not a royalist by any stretch of the imagination and always wonder what people see in the Royal family to be in awe or support them.
You only need to look at the way they're covered by the media. I'm young enough that this is the first generation where I've seen people become royal overnight, and the way the media turned on a dime with their reporting was incredible. They used to report on Kate Middleton roughly like they would any other celebrity. Maybe a bit more respectful, but generally similar. Then when they got married, "Catherine, the Dutchess of Cambridge" was suddenly spoken about in hushed, reverent tones, as if we should somehow admire her. Certainly on the BBC, the way they report on the royal family is massively different to anyone else.

"what first attracted you to future king of England?"

As expected, the thread stinks of the leftist bitterness and hatred.

What a shame, could have been a sensible discussion.

My 87year old mam always says of them, they are nice enough but nothing special , not a patch on my mam and dad. They brought up 9 kids through WW2 and had nowt.

You are aware it's completely possible to be against the monarchy and not be left wing? I would like us to live in an actual democracy, the left/right of that democracy to be decided by the people, as opposed to some archaic version of mixed monarchy which was only put in place because the British aristocracy/monarchy were shitting themselves that the fate that befell Louis XVI might be awaiting them too? Considering I've seen you banging on about the will of the people with regards to brexit, thought you'd be fully on board with this.

Yes I am perfectly aware but are you aware of those posting on here and what their views are?

The hope was a reasonable discussion around this situation and what had happened and how the monarchy should rectify it. It just became yet another pile on by the usual suspects.

You must have me mistaken, I voted remain and think Brexit is a mistake. We are a constitutional monarchy and it’s served us well for centuries and if the polls were anywhere near close, then a referendum may be warranted, but in every measurement, the monarchy has a high approval rating.

I doubt he is aware. He hates the left so much his bats left his belfry a long time ago.

The left/centrist progressive position has possibly always had an anti monarchist trait, because Monarchy in its absolute form is despotic and authoritarian, Conservatives see the Monarchy as being a traditional institution and Conservatism can in its extreme form be both despotic and authoritarian. Right Wing Classical Liberals like Von Mises and Thomas Paine were against hereditary Monarchy, although modern Classical Liberals would probably argue Von Mises was wrong in his assertion. The Right though have definitely had Anti Monarchist views in the past, nowadays though I see the Monarchy as a rallying point for the faux patriotic far right rather than the decent people of the country who just happen to think the Queen is a decent old bird, Harry is a bit of a lad and Williams wife has a nice arse.

Like I say I have no problem with the Royal family per se, its the trappings that go with, the unelected power it yields and the patronage its possess that doesn't sit right with me. They can Royal about as much as they like for me as long as they are treated just like every other person in this country, because hereditary power is what North Korea has.

We do live in an actual democracy. What you're describing is a republic, we tried that, it didn't work out so hot. But our current system ensures that no one institution can have 100% power and control over the public. Imean if living in an "actual democracy" was what was so important to you, why haven't you migrated to one?
