Running thread

Had a labral tear last year - physio suggested running only on soft ground or treadmills (she was really informative as it happens). My hip 'balls' are slightly less round than they should be so don't move as well as they should (and probably why I had this tear). Surgeon suggested laying off cutting me up to fix it although I'm pretty sure it's keyhole but they know so little about the procedure...less so than hip replacement. And of course, could hasten up osteoarthritis when I'm older. The second surgeon countered the initial cut down on running saying the latest info suggests it's probably more beneficial to run on this injury. Actually, if I lay off for a week that's when my hip/leg starts to ache again...but I also figure how much running has helped me both mentally and physically especially after the shit year I had last year.
I'm 45 and never felt fitter and stronger in my life...but determined to do a sub 20 park run this year (currently sat at 20:49). Not sure my hip could take a full marathon but I've done a half and fancy a few more this year.

I do tend to run faster in these cold winter nights though...good for the soul too!

Doing the Manchester full marathon in April, thankfully this year it isn't the day after derby day and a skin full of Guinness, never ever again, 4 hours of hell that was. Aiming for below 3:45 this time.

Haha, I’ve still some beers left from Xmas but refuse to have them, I’m turning into the wife, an utter stubborn ****....
I dont drink so at least i avoid that pitfall! With strava, I have a garmin watch so don't take my phone with me, Is it simply a case of bluetoothing from the garmin watch to strava app?

I've just started running, and ran every day bar two since December 14th, then I got a calf muscle strain on 20th Jan. I'm gutted that I've had to stop running. I felt a twinge last night, so will continue to rest for a few more days.

I've done my first two park runs, coming in at 27:52 and 26:50. I can now do some cycling to maintain fitness, but am missing the running. Anyone any hints or tips for recovering from a grade 2 calf strain?

Struggled with my calf’s to start with, had a massage and was informed they were knotted up, probably after years of football, getting injured but just carrying on hadn’t helped. Was told to buy a foam roller to use on them before and after running. Had no issues really after that, painful Achilles injury towards end of last year but seems ok now.
Wouldn’t run every night though, usually only run 3 or 4 times a week, need to get done recovery time in there.

With teacher training not managed to get out as much now the course has picked up pace. Managed another 19 minute parkrun Saturday though! Not been out this week due to tonsillitis :(

Thought about getting a roller - sound like they've worked for you. I was told by my physio I have to strengthen my core in order to try and protect my hip/s. So I now do a tonne of squats/lunges every day (plus press ups and dragon flags). Funny thing is once I started losing weight I lost my arse (running eventually starting to nibble away at your muscles once it's finished off your fat)...had that smackhead chic look/indie band/john cooper clarke ass...few months of squats/lunges and I've the best ass I've ever owned. Sometimes catch it in shop windows and wink at my own reflection.
