Running thread

I was reading Maffetone and Jason Fitzgerald yesterday. Has anyone tried running in Heart Rate zone 2 for the entire run?
I've just done this for an 8k run, occasionally walking when my heart rate approached 130. 122 is my target, and I managed to keep it at around 125 for most of the run.

I could breathe through my nose for all of the run, and I felt I could have kept going for much longer. It was strange going so slow, but still enjoyable. It felt that without the heat, I might not even have broken sweat. I'll stick with it for a while.

What's the gist of what these guys are saying?

What's everyone's thoughts on buying your running shoes online? Normally I'd go into the shop and do the whole trying on and walking around thing but obviously that's not an option right now. I know the brand I normally go for (Saucony) and obviously my size but I've never bought them without trying on before.
And as an addendum to that question, if anyone has done it before where from!

I just Googled it and read one article. I'll try and read a bit more. The gist appears to be running in the aerobic zone helps you to build stamina, and this gives you faster times when you go into a race or when you go for a faster time. It also seems to reduce injuries.
Yep. The phrase 'go slow to go fast' or 'train slow to race fast' are common in the running world.

If it's a model of shoe that you know works for you, then great. I know my favourite shoe so I just order it online all the time. www.sportsshoes.com often have the best prices but I also check on Google shopping.

If it's a brand and style you know I'd go for it, you can get much cheaper options. The first pair I got were a pair of Asics Kayanos because I did the whole gait analysis in Up and Running and they recommended them. Only ever bought those since, got them from Amazon for cheap(er than the shops) and never had any issues.

If I were you I'd Google the Saucony ones you have and get them from the cheapest place, maybe check they have a returns policy just in case.

I bought some from Up and Running. Same make and size as my previous ones (Brooks) and no problems.

Thanks for the replies to my earlier question. I'm reassured now, I just need to achieve my monthly mileage target for May and then I'll treat myself to a new pair!

That's a whole new take on 'conversational pace' for me though. I thought I had slowed up to a conversational pace, but this today was probably 30-60 seconds per kilometre slower again. It felt good arriving home not absolutely blowing though.

I'm a bit confused. I think I need to read up a bit more. I'm too old for racing though.

I’m literally running out of steam now, today was 5k number 57 out of 62 days since lockdown. The first 1k’s are just tiresome as I want to stop and can’t be arsed, then I’m ok after that once I’ve settled in to a rhythm. I probably need a couple of days off but again just can’t be bothered as it’s my routine and helps me justify my alcohol intake in the evenings, lol.

It really has become Groundhog Day.

the first couple miles just never get any easier no matter how much you run, it’s enjoyable after that I find.

Nightmare run today, my friend was dehydrated and had bad blisters, she had nothing left. The worst part was that we was 4-5 miles away from any main road.

eventually made it back and had to get an Uber home.

I was planning to go out today but seeing the trees blowing sideways decided not to. I don't mind rain, sun etc, but windy conditions are the worst.

Nice. I'm addicted as well - to both the running and the real ale, Beware you are likely to get injured if you always run 5k and have done so 57 days out of 62. Vary the distance, pace and terrain and take days off.

Have you considered cross training? I got the fixed gear bike out today for a change - grinding into a SW head wind for 10 miles and then spinning home with the tail wind. I loved it and got my fix without running - the joy of fixed! I will do a 7 mile trail run tomorrow.

Apologies if I'm teaching mother to suck eggs..

Good session this morning.

Mile to warm up then

3 x 200m
3 x 100m
3 x 50m

All at about 80-90% max pace

Then a mile back to car to cool down.

Feel nice now :)
Good stuff, bet the legs were burning at the end of those 50m sprints!
