Running thread

I've not done any running in a while but decided to dust off the trainers. Can anybody recommend any Apps or gadgetry that would help to track and record distance. Cheers and happy New Year.
I didn't take any tech with me for the first few years. Plotted it out on google and went out. It's liberating and takes your mind off any distractions. If you're listening to music, then yeah get some running headphones, download Strava and get out there :)

About a year ago, I decided I wouldn't mind tracking pace, gps and heart rate as I wanted to measure improvement/pace etc. Still not arsed about music so went with this for battery life and covers what I need.

You can invest in fancier watches, contactless payments, even ones that play music. I bought my wife the Polar M430 a few years back through my healthcare scheme (40% off) and she loves it but wouldn't go above £100 personally.

Cheers for that.

Enjoyed my 3rd 5 mile run since NY and starting to enjoy it. I have been stretching twice a day to keep stay injury free and hoping to run at least 5 x a week as I can no longer go to the gym.

I forgot how great you can feel after a good run. I'm not interested in timing my runs, just happy to run at least 5 x a week whilst staying injury free to keep fit, release endorphins and shed any excess weight.

My PB for 10km is 35 mins, 17 secs which I achieved at uni when I was 19 and should still be on the BUSA site. My last 10k was a few years a go and just over 40 mins (got caught in the bottle necks at the start).

Great time for a 10K at age 19 way before your peak potential fitness. I presume you stopped training otherwise you could have knocked a couple more minutes off it in your twenties? My PB of 37 mins for 10K was in my late 30s so past my peak.

I'm a bit envious of the decent running efforts on here in the new year because I'm injured and resigned to a few weeks off. Might be wise for me with the icy conditions.

Cheers pal, it was on track so the flat and softer surface worked to my benefit but achieved similar times in other races. Yes, I stopped running when I was 20/21. At the time I much preferred playing 11 a side football and socially it was great for me at the time living in a new city. I also wanted to beef up a bit (it was all the rage back then) with weight training which increased my weight.

37mins for 10k in your late 30s is a superb time, you should be proud.

my fastest 5k is just over 27 mins so credit to the 10 k in 40 mins!!

I ran 14k this afternoon, and am enjoying a relaxing evening by the fire, with that satisfying feeling of having a few aches and pains.

Cheers pal. Good effort from yourself.

It is great to hit PBs and have times to aim for which helps improvement but I also think it is equally great that people are out running (no matter the time / distance) and making themselves feel better.

I agree that’s the best thing I’ve seen. A lot of peooole (myself included) running around

As a 60 year old healthy bloke but overweight by about a stone what's the best advice to a newbie to running ?

get some decent running shoes and get out the door !

do the tiniest distance. End of the road and back , walk, jog it. Don’t go out running full speed. Take it really really easy.

you will gradually improve.
Download Strava, get a good playlist every now and then , see if you got any mates you can jog with - it helps breaking it up.

Always remember, if it was easy - everyone would do it. Be the one who can.
