Great North Run next Sunday….

2 weeks ago I was really looking forward to it, did 17km at 5:50km which I was more than happy with.

Last week went for an 18km run and it was horrible, had to walk a few times and was 6:43km pace so a real step back.

This morning, wanted to do 12km and only managed just over 4km. My calves were sore for some reason and just became too painful.

So next week could be a disaster
Are you allowing yourself sufficient recovery? Every third or fourth week should be low mileage, otherwise you will burn out. Also, it would be wise to taper for at least a week before the GNR. If you have an easy week now, I reckon you'll be fine.

I had a phase of running on a treadmill, in the gym, a couple of years ago, during winter. It's just too boring for me though - I much prefer running outdoors.

My boredom buster was listening to audiobooks, which I do when outside also. The furthest I managed on a treadmill was 10km.
Yeah, boredom is definitely the key factor. I've taken great pains to manage it by setting up an iPad with BBC Iplayer etc. ready with films and documentaries and so on, with Bluetooth earphones. I've had a couple of runs so far and it's been OK.

The main issue is definitely the heat from running indoors and the sweating! I'm getting a towel soaked through on each run... I have ordered a fan though, plus hopefully it will be less of an issue in the winter. We will see!

Tried to stick to 2 smaller runs and a long run the last few weeks

Long runs on a Sunday went up from 10km, 13km, 15km, 17km and then 18km. They were all in successive weeks though, and then I planned on doing 12km today (taper) and maybe a 5km during the week before the Half next weekend. Also been on Zwift doing a couple of 10-15km rides per week.

Maybe should have had a less active week thrown in at some point, but yeah, hopefully will be fine on the day.

Ran ‘The beast’ today down in Dorset. Some ridiculously steep hills which were barely walkable let alone runnable (Emmets head in Worth Matravers). Still a great experience, sea views, dramatic skyline, varied terrain but in the low moments, when the glutes were burning, I did question why I bother.

Well done beating the beast. I think we all must have one of those days, when things don't go quite as expected. Hopefully the exception rather than the rule.

Yes, just started running with a club so my training has changed to more sprint, fartleks etc and although it will no doubt over time prove beneficial, it has left me a bit tired of late.

Rarely a slog all the way round but I never quite got going or felt comfortable at any stage. Still we move on and as my last race was the Mcr Half before we lifted the title in May I was probably a bit undercooked mentally also.

Struggling like fuck at the moment, 5k is over 2/3 minutes slower than I’d like, 10k worse and just don’t seem to have much energy for it. 15 miles in total this week and just got to keep plodding on but at times I just want to throw my trainers in the bin.
Guess I need to sign up to something to get me motivated.

That’s the key , sign up for a race in a few weeks time

And get back out there!

You quickly get your mojo back, don’t worry about times for now

It's funny how runs can differ each day. I went out yesterday, three hours after butterfly chicken and coleslaw for lunch at Nandos. It felt as though my lunch hadn't digested though and I only managed 3km before heading home.

Today, soup and a cake for lunch, then three hours later I felt fine and managed 10km comfortably.

I've not done a race in ages. I might look for one too.

Did you use to do the 15 min plod when you used to run every day for a year.or is this a recent development

1000 days :)

but yeh, that was normally my routine and i'm doing the same again

Monday - 15 mins (1.5 miles)
Tuesday - 15 mins (1.5 miles)
Wednesday - Run club track training (varied, but would be like 4x800m/3x600m/2x400m etc)
Thursday - 5k
Friday - 4-5 miles
Saturday - Parkrun
Sunday - long run - 10k or above

4 Miles before the match last night in the rain, realised that it’s wet weather I prefer and actually enjoyed it for the first time in a while too.
15 miles on the bike at 5.30 am in the pissing rain. Too warm for waterproofs so just went with cycling shorts and short sleeved top. Perversely I rather enjoyed it.

Did some hill reps tonight.
Thought I would struggle as my running mojo isn't ace.
But....desapite being quite tough, I absolutely loved it. Even managed to run a few k home afterwards.

And I think it's because it's cooler and it's far easier on my engine (think I always preferred running in the winter and in fact that's where I first cut my running teeth a few years ago).

This may mean I can start pushing over 10ks again and that's where I always got those sublime runners highs.
