Running thread

23km done today. New longest run record (until next weekend anyway).

9km easy, 5km marathon pace, 9km easy.

Should have been 6km at marathon pace but I fell apart after 14km, I was on pace up until that point. The last few kms were rough.

Be happy if I can walk tomorrow!
haha was just about to post about my troubles, and saw the distances youre talking about, anyway here goes ,try not to laugh :)

week 6 run 1 ,5mins,8mins,5 mins,

i had a brainwave, i enjoy fishing for pike/perch so my great idea ,park up next to the canal,i thought it had a decent pathway do my run and have a fish,,what could possibly be hard about that after my 20 mins run the other day, off i set, first 5 mins was good, early morning taking in the sights of the canal and wildlife(no music on today wanted to be aware of cyclists) when the 8 min run started the ground changed ,very uneven ,big puddles and i really struggled to complete it, half way through the 8 minutes the bell goes to signal half way through, but i had to take a breather about 30 seconds then set off again, i was quite annoyed with myself , then onto the 5 min run which was easier , not sure what went wrong on the 8 min run, after the run went fishing(didnt catch anything :) ) but my calves are fucked , i can only put it down to the uneven ground, im stiff already :(

You'll surprised how quick you end up there. Before May, I hadn't run since November and before August last year I hadn't run properly in about 10 years. Even in May I would have considered a 2 mile run a long run!

The uneven path and softer terrain will make your runs harder, you lose your rhythm, you don't get as much of a response that solid ground gives. It does protect your joints though so there are some positives, plus the scenery as you mentioned.

I personally hate running on the canal, as a 6ft 5 runner who has to constantly duck under overhanging trees it just isn't enjoyable.

Running isn't just a straight line in terms of progression, you get the odd session where you feel you've regressed or dropped slightly but if you stay consistent the overall trend is always upwards. I feel like I have 1 bad session every couple of weeks.

Ack I wouldn't let a tough one put you off your stride mate, its supposed to be hard, if it was easy every fucker would be at it. Keep chipping away at it, long term goals are the way forward with this game, you might not be able to run far now, but give it time and work and what you find hard now will be a piece of piss

Midweek training run completed from Castlefield Basin to Throstles Nest Footbridge and back along the Bridgewater Canal.
Had to negotiate a gaggle of a dozen or so Canada Geese on the towpath outwards, but thankfully they were all back in the canal on my return!

Horrible things them geese, there really needs to be a cull of em, but folk think it's nice to feed em, have done that kind of run loads of times wondering are they going to be round the next corner

Hi guys - I seem to have jumped from ASICS 2000 8 to ASICS 2000 10! Anyone into their ASICS - these seem a tighter fit and look like they will need a fair bit of breaking in ? Hopefully they will ease off soon …

I wore Asics GT2000 for about 12 years (not the same pair) but have moved to Nike now. Sorry, I haven't got the v10 so I can't help so this reply is pointless really.

Never mind the Canadian geese, I had a wasp fly straight up my nostril 3 miles into a 10 miler this morning, fuck me that hurt, took me half a mile to get it out, and then the rest of the run nostrils and eyes streaming, got a silver on the strava segment while I was busy trying to snort and shake the fucker out of me head, every cloud I guess, but boy did that hurt

Week 6 run 3 completed, wow sweaty, but a great way to start my last day off :)
Treadmill again, was feeling it in my back and calves, can anyone recommend a good pre and post run stretching video, I'm not doing them ,all I'm doing is a 5 minute brisk walk before and after

Before and after runs I do:
5 x standing on one leg & holding the other up to my arse on each leg (is it called a flamingo pose or something?)
5 x lunges on each leg
5 x squats.
Then walk briskly for 5 - 10 minutes to where I want to start my runs.
In addition to this, when I do Parkruns, I do 2 lots of jogging for a minute or so just to satisfy myself that my knees still work
Seems to work for me & has kept me injury free so far.

I like Adriene.. https://yogawithadriene.com/yoga-runners-cool/

I'm a believer in regular stretching/yoga - although I find yoga a bit boring at times. The best yoga I've found for me is Ashtanga, it sort of feels like a work-out.
