Russia detects possible signal from "sun like star"

Just a reminder that religion is all based on Faith. Thats Faith...not proof.
So for those of us with a little faith, its good to have a reminder from the condescending smart arses on here, that we are all actually idiots.....and that they and they alone hold the secrets of existence....

I can only repeat, watch the 'Out of the Blue' documentary on YouTube, it might give you something to think about.

I am reminded of the fact that not so very long ago, we thought that the earth was the centre of the universe. We were so caught up in our delusions of own self-importance that we had such a ridiculous notion. Once that was clearly proved to be rubbish, we imagined that our sun instead was at the centre.

It's only now that we can see how utterly daft such views were. Views that we as humans are in some way "special" will one day be proved to be similarly stupid when we find that the universe is in fact teeming with life forms, some of which are immeasurably more advanced that ourselves.

Spot on. If god is so unbelievably brainy, why couldn't he even remember that the universe he created was fuck all like what he dictated to the scribes?

Galileo was to be put to death for having the temerity to point out that we orbit the sun.

He decided to recant and live under house arrest for the remainder if his life.

Religion is an anti intellectual cancer that infects minds and encourages beliefs in supernatural horseshit that was accepted wisdom when they were written but we now know are myths.

Yet people still believe in Adam and Eve. The world was created in six days. That a guy survived in the stomach of a whale. That Jesus walked in water. That angels exist. That the devil us a real dude who an all powerful god could destroy but chooses not to. Why?

The mind boggles at how otherwise rational intelligent people can look you in the eye and earnestly tell you they believe this type of baloney is astounding.

Although I do believe in Santa. I have seen him. Which is more than any religious person could say.

Apart from the really disturbed ones.

I have never said that people are idiots. I do say that they preserve a little mind space to believe in things that don't make sense when examined.

I was brought up in a faith and believed it too. It was only when I looked at it rationally do you question that faith. Everybody having the 'real' god at the same time. The death of all the other gods. The massive contradictions within each book. The things that are just wrong scientifically got me to ask what is more likely?

An omnipotent all knowing all creating god forgot how he did it? Or, men using the knowledge of the day write it and pretended god told them in order that they could control people and make money?

I think omnipotent means unerring.

God can't be both an omnipotent and absent minded. Therefore he didn't write or dictate it. Man did
Man made.

Scared of dying and the nothingness which follows.

Religion is evil, contrived for the feeble.

Right. I'll be interested to know your view on it because I found it very interesting and thought provoking. Seems we don't know even half of what's going on in the world.

We have to be careful though of the human condition to replace lack of verifiable knowledge with conjecture and joining up the plethora if potential dots that fits the belief you are party to.

Objectivity is the first casualty of that approach. So, for example, people look at the great pyramids and wonder how they did it. We know how they did it but some prefer to believe aliens helped. I always find that an insult to the genius of our ancestors. Insulting to the species.

Think I read somewhere that free men built the pyramids and not slaves as quoted in the Bible? Could be wrong though.

Think pretty much everyone outside the ruling and military classes was a slave back then bud.
