Russian invasion of Ukraine

I don’t know about loving it, but we should follow this war in all its detail including the barbaric behaviour of the Russian soldiers. A fair number of western politicians seem to have had the notion, taken from Ostpolitik, that the Russian bear could be tamed and brought within the European fold, by trade and cultural exchanges. We now know that this is wrong and I hope all European leaders take notice of this now and in the future.

Exactly. I’d much rather Russia stayed the fuck inside its own borders and didn’t invade a peaceful neighbour. But it didn’t so we pay attention and cheer every Ukrainian success.

Some Russian MPs and former military commanders are saying the steelwork fighters should be executed.

Propaganda for the Russian people.
A deal was done to make the surrender happen. If Russia backs out of the deal then their chances of any deal with anyone in the future are nill rather than just low.

It should not be forgotten that Russia agreed in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum to respect the political independence of Ukraine and its borders. Furthermore, Russia agreed to refrain from any acts of aggression towards Ukraine.

I hate to defend trump but he didn't look to eliminate Nato.
There is agreement that every country spends, I believe, 2% of their budget on Nato defence. A number of countries especially Germany, hadn't been doing this for some time. Trump basically said, if you don't pay your dues we won't either.
The invasion of Ukraine has woken a lot of countries up, tbf to the orange one, that's what he was trying to do.
Not on NATO Defence. Just on defence. The US never said it would spend less on that in the future at all.

The French, German and Italian polical classes really do have a problem with Ukraine. https://www.politico.eu/article/europes-leaders-fall-out-of-key-on-ukraine/
It's all to do with gas and oil and the very silly German decision to get rid of their nuclear power, and also remember that the whole of Europe has benefited from the theft of Russian assets by the oligarchs, whole industries have sprung up around it or done very well, from Italian yacht makers, german cars, french and british real estate, British bankers and accountants the list is huge, and the whole golden visa system

It's basically theft from the Russian people, and the western world (America included) has been complicit

I do not want to turn this thread into what Trump did or did not say. It is well reported what he said.
Yes and he was wrong then also. There’s no NATO pot that is paid into. Just a recommendation that countries spend 2% of GDP on defence. Trump kept stating that countries owed America money.
