The Dam being blown is a very sad day.
The Russians will have done it as around 40k Ukraiians in occupied Kherson Oblast on the low lying left/east bank will probably drown as a result.

Not only that, if Spiderboy has been accurate over the last few weeks there are a fair few Uktrainian soldiers on the small islands between the left and right banks. im going to guess setting up some pontoons for crossing. this will stop that for a while and will probably take out a fair few of those soldiers

The only benefit is it protects the Russian forces rear on the Zaporizhzhia front.

I have no doubt that they will lay waste to the Nuclear power plant when the time comes as well.

It would not surprise me in the slightest if blowing up the dam turned out to be a huge strategic blunder by Russia. Getting things badly wrong seems to be the only thing they specialise in.

Situation at nuclear plant 'under control' after dam blast​

The destruction of the Kakhovka dam by Russian forces in southern Ukraine poses a threat to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, but the situation at the facility is under control, Ukraine’s state atomic power agency has said.
“Water from the Kakhovka Reservoir is necessary for the station to receive power for turbine capacitors and safety systems of the ZNPP,” Ukraine’s nuclear operator Energoatom said. “Right now the station’s cooling pond is full: as of 8:00 a.m., the water level is 16.6 meters, which is sufficient for the station’s needs.”
“Currently, the situation at the ZNPP is under control, Ukrainian personnel are monitoring all indicators,” it said.

There are suggestions that Russian incompetence and neglect may have caused the failure, rather than deliberate sabotage.



Which would be very much in line with everything that's happened in the whole war if true.

The damn was hit back in Nov last year by retreating Russian forces. entirely possible that this weakened it and with no maintainnce has caused this now.

Edit: Or made it easier to hit one last time to break it properly.
