Russian invasion of Ukraine

Russia may start withdrawing troops from southern Ukraine to hold Bahmut, according to

Analysts note that, due to Ukraine's counter-offensive in Bahmut, the russian command is reallocating forces from other regions of Ukraine. It is known that the russians recently moved an unspecified airborne regiment from the Lyman direction to Bahmut. However, if the reinforcements already sent to Bahmut are insufficient, russia might have to risk creating significant vulnerabilities in the Kherson or Luhansk regions or start withdrawing troops from southern Ukraine.

The question is WHY ?

I keep thinking the same. There‘s got to be more to this place than prestige, mere tactics and what meets the eye.

Can’t think what, but no other explanation makes nearly as much sense.
It's called Russian vanity.
They spent 244 days taking it with the loss of 30 to 40 thousand men. Losing it would would rather knock Russian prestige.
Okay 20 to 25 thousand were Wagner but that's not the point.
Ukraine has now set up a number of undefendable kill zones around Bakhmut and the Russians ard throwing the kitchen sink into defending them.
