Saints (A) Post Match Thread

Saints targeted our left back and DM. It worked for them a fair few times. That Vestergaard lad is a proper unit, his diagonals to Walcott caused us all sorts of issues, and when they pressed Rodri it also caused us problems.

Lots of positives, Bernardo just needs any sort of scrappy goal, because he looked very good otherwise, most of our players did. Only Ferran looked a bit out of place but can't fault him, he was well marked when central.

Hate to say this but they played Wednesday night, we played Tuesday.
This definitely contributed because their team press vanished after first half, made it much easier for us to deal with them.

That performance deserved at least 3 goals but everyone has lost their shooting boots, Bernardo, KDB and Mahrez should all have been on the score sheet.

Lets not ignore that was a very good defensive performance, against one of the most in form teams in the league though. As nervous as I was in that last 10 mins, the clean sheet was fully deserved. Lets hope Bielsa's words after the Leeds vs City game start to ring true for City: "...which indicates that a lot of the time, you have to defend better, so that you can attack well"

Imagine centurions attack form coupled with a rock solid defence, that would be a City team no team in the world would fancy their chances against.

Not just the defensive performance, we have been, in my option, superb from our goal line to the opposition's 18yard line ,then it just turns to crap. Some of the decision making around goal was, well, strange to say the least.

But in a way those two things are interlinked and explains why were poor in the final third.

We often play a front three, which includes a midfielder (Bernardo/Silva even Mahrez) so this helps us keep possession, control a game, move through the pitch but sadly it does not help when were in front of goal as that is not their specialism.

The flip side to this is Liverpool. Having that front three (all strikers) they may be less aesthetic in the build up but in front of goal they are a lot more ruthless this year.

But they haven’t been all over Europe, I know succes brings travel but this season you can see tiredness in teams competing in Europe

I can't tell if this is a joke? Poor old Saints they had a day less rest? Seriously?!

They had a month more rest between seasons and they've played 15 games this season to our 21.

They have had a full weeks rest between games 9 times. We have had 0. Zero. None.

They have 5 players who get international call ups and we have 17. Thats 12 more players who get to put their feet up for 2 weeks every month or so while ours are playing more games.

And you think its impkrtant they got a days less rest?

The last 10-15 minutes of match showed why we're struggling to score goals this season.

Instead if smashing the ball into the back of the net, we're either trying to place the ball into the net, or once again trying pass the ball to another player to score.
