He touches on what I think is the key issue in this argument - those in the remaining parts of the UK will be foolish to have investments in Scotland when there is no fiscal policy agreement in place between the nations. However, should there be a YES vote, Westminster would need to immediately support a plan to help the transition to Scottish independence to prevent a run on the financial institutions (think Northern Rock) that could trigger severe financial damage to both sides of the border. I think this is what Deutsche Bank was referring to over the weekend and why all the major institutions have created a plan B.

So with Westminster supporting the Scottish economy, focus then turns to the EU vote in 2017(?). With less pro-EU voters there is a possibility that the remaining UK could leave the EU whilst during the same period Scotland have made attempts to join the EU. The paradox here is that the EU will likely reject Scotland's attempts to join whilst their economy is subject to so much uncertainty, having just scraped through the Greece/Portugal/Ireland debacle.

Predominantly pro-European Scottish voters who vote YES will more than likely be voting for non-EU status and medium to long-term support from their southern neighbours. They'll be more In Dependency than Independent. In effect, it will be the English, Welsh and Nor'n Irish who determine their future.
