Agreed. However it is a sad situation that the Judge needs to take counsel as to whether or not he can legally pass this sentence.

The problem is that the powers that be are either too lazy or too clueless to address it.

More like too scared, it is too divisive an issue that ultimately has a yes (for) or no (against) decision, politicians can't handle that!

There seems to be a bit of confusion of the EU ruling earlier in the year and I think this is why the judge is holding fire on sentencing here
to make certain everything is above board.

As someone else pointed out earlier in the thread though , even if the ruling is accepted at it's most restrictive and a whole life term without
the possibility of parole becomes a sentence not available for a judge, it is unlikely to change anything in practice. It would just mean a prisoner
would be entitled to ask for a pointless review of his status after 30 or 40 years.

I imagine what the judge is looking to sentence them on is:

A whole life starting point would normally be appropiate for....

..... A murder done for the purpose of advancing a political, religious or ideological causes.

the fuel for the fire for this whole situation is the incessant desire for a story by a 24hrs a day media machine.... If we weren't so hooked into news then there would be no soapbox for extremists. Not sure whether there was a change in the law since the days of the IRA but we should consider banning this minority preaching hate, we don't see the EDL thank goodness so why do we see the likes of Choudary?

If we do have to see them for the sake of "fairness" then script their appearance, edit it afterwards and tone down their message

Failing that do what they did with the likes of McGuiness and Adams and have a jobbing actor read their words..... ideally someone monotone and lacking any passion for the message being delivered
