Inter Milan's Holland midfield star Wesley Sneijder is ready to join Premier League champions United while Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero - Diego Maradona's son-in-law - is close to signing for FA Cup winners City.

City, meanwhile, are close to clinching a deal for Aguero, which would pave the way for the departure of leading goalscorer Carlos Tevez to Spain or Italy.

Although Atletico were previously reported to be holding out for £50m, it emerged last night that Atletico could be willing to accept £40m - and City have the cash ready.

City manager Roberto Mancini and his squad were already heading for a pre-season tour of California last night. But the Italian is being kept abreast of negotiations.

Aguero would be City's first major signing of the summer and is likely to be followed by the arrival of Arsenal's Samir Nasri for £25m.

If we pull those two off I´ll pull myself off - for a whole week non-stop!

Manchester City chase striker Sergio Agüero while Carlos Tévez may be forced to stay as his options ebb away
The Eastlands club are looking to strengthen their attacking firepower and are interested in signing Sergio Agüero from Atletico Madrid.

While the Argentina striker, who is on national duty at the Copa America, is only one of several options being considered, it has become clear City want to recruit a forward whether or not they sell his international team-mate Carlos Tévez.

Going into the summer transfer window, City wanted to sign Alexis Sanchez from Udinese but the player has made it clear he wants to sign for Barcelona. So even before Tévez released his latest statement about wanting to leave, City have been refining a list of targets to add to City’s strike force.

Agüero is attracting interest from across the continent, with Juventus reportedly bidding £32million for him. City could go higher than that and in Italy it is being reported that the Turin club will now try to sign Guiseppe Rossi from Villarreal instead.

If Tévez is sold, City could look for further recruits but the Argentina striker, also at the Copa America, is facing the prospect of being forced to remain at City after it emerged the club have received no formal enquiries for him and Real Madrid edged closer to securing Brazil striker Neymar.

Tévez issued a statement outlining his desire to leave City so as to be reunited with his daughters, who are based in Buenos Aires but would be willing to live nearer their father in warmer climes.

That statement, though, has not pressed into action any of the handful of clubs who could come close to matching City’s £50million valuation of the 27 year-old, as well as paying something akin to the player’s wages, understood to be the highest in the Premier League at around £230,000 a week.

Sources in Spain have suggested Real would consider an offer for Tévez featuring Karim Benzema as a makeweight as well as around £25million in cash, but that prospect receded yesterday as Neymar’s agent, Wagner Ribeiro, revealed the Spanish side were close to an agreement to sign the Santos striker.

“Neymar’s preference is to join Real Madrid,” Ribeiro said. “But he also wishes to play in the World Club Championship for Santos in December before moving to Spain. There is no problem in terms of the fee or his wages. The only issue is the date [of the move]. The best thing would be if he could stay with Santos until January, so he could make history with the club, but sign a contract and conclude a deal now so that he can move to Spain afterwards.”

The Real Madrid manager, Jose Mourinho, has already spent around £50million this summer, and a £41 million deal for Neymar would make the chances of the club’s owner, Florentino Pérez, sanctioning a substantial outlay on Tévez remote.

Should no bids materialise, Tévez will be forced to return to City. The club do not expect him to refuse to come back to England after the Copa America, and there is a possibility he may be offered a new contract in a bid to ease his unhappiness, but that will be left in the hands of his manager, Roberto Mancini.

I deffo get the vibe he wants Tevez gone, there is no point having a sulky cnut around the place when he doesn't want to be there. I think Mancini has put up with enough bullshit from him and i can't see him taking anymore.
