If it is people falling in, then still, there needs to be something done about it. If there were 15 deaths on one road in the space of 2 years the council would have done all sorts of calming measures.

Granted it isnt one road its a network of canals and rivers too, but surely waist high fencing cant be that expensive especially given the rate at which people dying here.
112 deaths 2010 & 2011 (can't find newer figures) on the roads in the whole of greater manchester over a two year period.

Now when you consider how many thousands of miles of roads there and the tens millions of users over that same time, it beggars belief that more isn't been done to warn the publi of the dangers of being a male walking home near water on he way back from town (due to the serial killer).
What were the river/canal related death figures for the two years previously to 2010?
6,477 in a 115 yard stretch of the Irwell.

Can't be a murderer then

I hope he's been getting plenty of sleep 'cos it's gonna be like all his birthdays AND Christmas' have come at once with all the pusher in opportunities down those canals this weekend.

I did actually make a post in this thread not long ago that was an insight into what police think is happening. But it got lost in the bickering.

Police are trying piece together the last movements of a man found dead in the River Irwell.

Patrick Martin, 55, from Bolton was last seen at his home on Silchester Way at around 8.30am on Monday (Aug 19).

His body was discovered in the River Irwell near Trinity Bridge Way, Salford at around 10.45pm yesterday (Weds).

His death is not currently being treated as suspicious but police are appealing for anyone who may have seen Patrick in his final hours to come forward.

He is described as white, 5ft 4in tall, of heavy build and had short grey hair and blue eyes. When he was last seen he was wearing a black jacket, white t-shirt and black trousers.

“While we cannot answer these questions at the current time, we will hopefully be able to do so with some help from the public.

“I want to hear from any friends or acquaintances of Patrick’s who may have seen him or spoken to him between Monday morning and Wednesday night.

“I would also urge anyone who may have been in the area where he was found and remembers seeing someone matching his description at any point between these times to call us.”

Move along here, nothing to see, don't you dare insinuate that our boys (and girls) in blue would ever cover anything up.

Said St Helens Blue.
As I said previously..along with the detectives..the crime scene examiners...the home office pathologists....fuck me..some people really need to realise that people die all the time in canals.Sam..I never said the police haven't covered anything up but it is seriously hilarious to think some believe a serial killer is on the loose stalking the canal paths etc..show me one bit..just one bit of physical evidence and we can talk about it.
15 deaths in 2 years.

That is a fact Sam,just numbers of deaths-Not evidence of murder. You believe they are murders. For them to be murders there will be some physical evidence of Foul Play which will be identified normally by a post mortem carried out by the home office pathologist. Trauma to the body etc etc. As I said pal,in my opinion it would have to be a cover up of all cover ups involving every person involved in any investigation.

-- Thu Aug 22, 2013 8:30 pm --

And therein lies the point. Its the councils job to make it safer. Why would the police have responsibility for that? Its not for the law to tell people not to get drunk or depressed or go to quiet places by water when they are one or the othr or often both.

Stop talking sense will you pal. It will ruin the illusion of the serial Killer along the canal!!!

Hence why I mentioned the council in my post? So wherein lies your point? Never said it was the polices issue. Never mentioned the law.

It's too many too ignore. The least you'd expect is some kind of police outreach program to promote personal safety, targeted at bars, clubs and the universities. That GMP seem to be doing nothing is remarkable in itself.

Johnny- Are you serious? It isn't the cops job 24-7 to be telling people how much to drink, how to get home safely etc etc. There are plenty of promotional campaigns that have been on the media recently which are far more important than telling irresponsible adults how much to drink on a night out and not to walk near canals.
Have a look at the "one punch" campaign. Much more important and relevent in this day and age.
Do you still think that there are cops galore all over the place. I wish mate because it would make my job a hell of a lot easier. Instead I am lucky to have 6-8 response officers on a Fri or Sat night covering a massive area.
If people want to get paralytic and walk near canals then the unfortunate events will happen. Not saying all alcohol relted but a lot are mate.

-- Thu Aug 22, 2013 9:01 pm --

The cops can only go on the evidence and at the moment it appears that there is none to suggest that any of these deaths are suspicious
