I cut down the canal under picaddily that goes to canal street one night and i saw some sights down there. There was a bloke sucking off 3 blokes and a guy getting bummed up against a wall, another guy asked me if i was going for a sauna.
Bit off topic, but still

Interesting, where abouts was it? And what time?

Why, you're not thinking of joining in Dave are you? ;)

No but my boyfriend might

Ive been drunk numerous times near water and never once been close to staggering in. If that was a serious case then surely people would be staggering in the road all the time and being hit.

I meqan , look at that Brahey lad, there was CCTV of him after he had stopped drinking and he walked for miles to town with no issue, then falls in the water and can't get out?

I am pretty sure people dont just fall in water, even if they are drunk, and cant get out.
People do, I have dealt with 5 in 9 years. Its common regrettably. From experience its been people who are depressed, recently had bad news or even had a bad time with their mrs on a night out. But a common factor in all of them is alcohol

5 in 9 years. 1 every 2 years say. It seems a little more common recently. And there has been no mention of depression in any case recently. Surely some of those 5 you said could easily be suicide from what your saying. If not all. So lets just say 2 were suicide. That's 3 in 9 years. One in 3. It's far more common recently.

Thats just the number ive dealt with personally, there have been many more. I dont live in manchester anymore so its not there, but many havent been suicides but more accidents. As you rightly say cctv etc has shown them walking ok, and witnesses or friends say the same, but for whatever reason they have been drawn to quiet locations and rivers, marinas etc. Most are dark, without railings or barriers. People in water aled up do not do well, particularly after falling which naturally takes the breath away first. Post mortems show this, drowning. Those same pm's show other injuries, and if any are found then those deaths are investigated thoroughly. All deaths are anyway, but what i mean in is if a pm shows other trauma then such unexplained deaths are treated as murder. And those enquiries are vast and detailed. Tragedies happen, and we all of them more these days to the promimence of news on such rumour mills as facheache or twitter.

After a bit of simple googling, here's a short list, without naming names other than the ones widely publicised, of bodies pulled out of canals in recent years.

Unnamed white male - Canal near Ducie Street 2008
White Male - Canal in Lower Broughton December 2010, last seen, ironically, at The Mitre Bar, the last known CCTV of Chris Brahney
White Male - Manchester Ship Canal - March 2011
White Male - Canal Street - June 2012
Gurdeep Hayer - Canal near York Street - January 2012
Chris Brahney - Salford Quays - July 2012
Michael Turner - River Irk - July 2012
Souvik Pal - Bridgewater Canal - yesterday, January 2013

All male, all in their early twenties except for two. Four of whom were found last year alone. And those are just the ones I can find. Can anyone else see a pattern here?

I just don't buy all these young men (except two) simply being suicidal or accidentally falling in the water while drunk. I accept that this happens, of course, and tragic it is too. But with this frequency? Not in my opinion.

My brother, Michael Turner, was found dead in the river Irk on July 28 2012. He was last seen on cctv on July 20 2012. He had a drug problem in the past. He had been clean for 18 months. He was actually on a methadone programme. He started at 80ml and he was down to 34ml, he was almost ready to be weaned off the methadone. He was on his way up. His post mortem was inconclusive to a cause of death, like 98% of the men found in rivers in the past 7 years. There were NO drugs in his blood and alcohol found his blood was well below the drink drive limit. There has been NO appeal for witnesses as apparently there is NO specific dates!!!!!! July 20 & July 28 are obviously not specific dates!!!! He also had a bike which was 4-6 weeks old, never to be seen again, even though he is seen leaving his flat with it on cctv. He had left his mobile & cigarettes in his flat, and a half eaten sandwich. Though he was found with £5 in his pocket. If he intended to kill himself, why take £5? Bus fare to Heaven? Plus, Mike had picked up his perscription for his Methodone for the weekend on the day he was last seen. If he wanted to kill himself would it not of been easier to drink all of that, it would of been enough to kill him, rather than go to the lowest part of the river Irk!!!!! Mike was 43, but there are too many inconsistencies around his death, like the numerous other poor souls found in Manchesters rivers & canals. I will not rest until I find out what happened to him!!!

^^^ Very interesting. The not should look into it, the more I think there is something dodgy going on. One question that I've thought if today. The location where the lad was found yesterday is right next to United. Every home game hundreds of fans walk that canal path, so how hasnt he been spotted before now!

Whilst you cannot equivocally rule it out, the problem with all this is it is a human condition to look for patterns in everything.

Finding patterns help us rationalise the world we live in and events that occur. Sometimes then, we try to shoehorn a pattern to suit a given theory. Patterns are comforting but like statistics, can ultimately be misleading.

Well I actually agree with you, Strongbow. I never set out to look for patterns on this but patterns turned up - at least for me. And whilst I accept that a lot of these tragic deaths are just that - tragic suicides or accidents, there remains a ningling doubt that not all is at is it seems in Manchester's waterways. If anyone else goes missing, particularly a missing person whom is widely publicised, I bet he ends up in a canal, unfortunately.
