Approx 5% (6,000) police officers in the UK are authorized firearms officers , who routinely carry firearms.Most of ours are tbf, they have access to firearms in patrol vehicles.
So 95% are NOT authorized to use/carry firearms.
Therefore MOST of ours are NOT authorized to use firearms in the UK.

I’ve been going for forty years.Yeah but the car wasn't being used a weapon. It was joyriding.
In effect what you're advocating is that anyone in a car that doesn't stop, or drives away, should be shot. Or could be.
Seems wrong to me, and I'm sure that this police officer will be convicted. Which again is a shame because he didn't do it on purpose.
It's panic afaic. Everyone loses.
Anyone know why the police in France carry weapons? Had it always been like that?

They were armed long before that with pistols.Since the terrorist attacks back in 2016 iirc, they then allowed them to carry weapons.
