Should Alan Hansen be sacked for racism?

Perhaps someone should contact the BBC and ask if anyone, just anyone person, has officially complained about the use of the word "coloured" !!!

While appearing on Match of the Day on 21 December 2011, Alan Hansen became involved in a racism controversy. There was a backlash on Twitter, the BBC had received 82 complaints by the following morning and footballers distanced themselves from Hansen's choice of words. Shamrock Rovers player Rohan Ricketts asked if "this Alan Hansen guy [is] taking the f****** piss??" and said Hansen was "part of the problem". Stan Collymore said: "Coloured? What colour would that be? Blue? Green? Orange?"[1]

As I say mate, some black people really don't like it.

I had no idea but happened to stumbble across this discussion in the pub this summer when I used to term "coloured" and my mates all winced. I thought it was the correct term but it appears not. I wasn't being vindictive when saying it but it's one of those where some will and some won;t be arsed, depending on life experience.

So I just avoid it now. It's no big loss in my life.

Anyway, Hansen's apologised and that should be the end of the matter.

-- Thu Dec 22, 2011 7:53 pm --

Who said you can't say black?

Well I clearly don't understand how racism works then?

Calling someone black is fine but if the word black is before any insulting word i.e ****, bastard, knob head... then this is deemed racist? Have I got that right?

Yes, it the use of the word in the pejorative as an adjective that is the problem.

Call someone a ****, no need to reference their colour.

I knew as soon as he said 'coloured' on MOTD that the usual Twatter/Facebook generation would be up in arms. Utter shite. Maybe we all know that black people are now called black, and that Asians are now called Asian. Hansen's generation use the word 'coloured'. If you take offence, then fuck off and grow a thicker skin. All that needs to happen is that Hansen needs to be told that it's OK to call black people black - I'll bet he thought calling someone black would be racial.
