Social Media - is it really a good thing?

The job of social media is engagement (time = £££), so it actually FEEDS YOU YOUR PERCEIVED NARRATIVE, and that keeps you engaged longer!

“The algorithm” learns YOUR TASTE, then feeds it back to you. YOU have to make the effort to change that by your clicks and, more importantly, what you DO NOT EVER click on!

You see, YOU THINK you’re in control of your social media presence and what you read & click, but that’s only partially true, because the computer is DESIGNED to feed your needs, even when you don’t think you have them or even know they exist!

Which is innocent enough when it first came around, because for people who like certain clothing/footwear/bands/sports/art/films/ etc. it would keep them updated of the things they have interests in. It’s a great idea for those things.

But then as soon as you get people who are into social issues and politics, it’s an absolute fucking disaster for all of us. It feeds people the same shit all the time so some are made to think they are the victims of things when, really, they aren’t. And it warps the minds of those who only see and hear of their side of thinking and keeps nudging them further and further over to one side of thinking, eventually to an extreme, and makes other views appear evil enemies of their “side”.

Too many social media types are now going round living their lives claiming they are oppressed or calling out perceived oppression and are permanently fucking offended by everything, or they are too far over on one side of political thinking, because that’s all they see and hear.

If people took themselves off social media for two years and just lived their lives in the real world, they’d realise that the vast vast majority of people - especially in Great Britain - are just normal moderate folk who are decent and kind. Great Britain is the most accepting and tolerant country in the world. Yet social media makes people think we’re a rabidly racist and oppressive country.

Social media is also far too America-centric. It makes people think America is the world and whatever is going on there are the most important things going on in the world and people involve themselves in it. In real life I don’t know a single person who gives a shit about the USA, it’s people, it’s social issues, it’s politics. The average Brit cares as little about the goings on over there as we do the goings on in Hungary or Suriname. Between my group of mates, we’ve never once had a conversation about USA social issues or politics, but even on the News we have daily updates about the orange bloke and some shit some no mark actor has said. Even on this website, we have a few threads about Septic politics. Why? We don’t ever see Aussie political threads.

Useful for something’s, I’ve hardly used it in months but advertised my house to rent today and will probably save £500 in agents advertising fees. Since not going on so much I realise how needy and pathetic it made me, posting things for attention and likes. It’s just a waste of time tbh

You self-selected a group, then equated Aussie politics with the far-reaching implications of American politics, as it relates to Europe and the UK.

Hopefully, that helps illuminate the inequality of the comparison? The USA is central to the globe power dynamics that greatly affect Europe. That’s why the USA is often front and center, even if you THINK it is an irrelevance to your life outside social media.

Spot on, this is why we are getting more polarised as a society, we’re all living in echo chambers. Critical thinking and debate are being eroded as we’re only being exposed to the views we ‘like’.
 
Have to admit. Facebook market place is very good.
managed to sell/buy so much on there and it’s really simple and quick to do.
