Southampton (A) - Carabao Cup | Post Match Thread

Something not quite right we have not played to our best much this season. We looked like we were second best in a relegation 6 pointer remember those days.
Some of the players need a rocket or moving on.Cancelos performance last night was Ged Brannan esque.Foden and Palmer keep receiving the ball and passing back and sideways they need to move forward with purpose.
The jury is nearly back on Grealish he aint going to work for us.
We need to start playing a settled back 4 as well.
I dont mind losing had plenty of practice but effort and hard work is a must.

I’m not going to single out any individuals as our overall display was very disappointing but hopefully a few positives from the game.

1. Southampton played really well but I doubt they’ll put another performance like that together for the rest of the season.

2. Hopefully Pep has realised not to listen to his ridiculous ideas for the rest of the season and

3. Although I would have liked us to go all the way and win the league cup, it means we have at least 3 games less to clog up our fixtures

The midfield was messed up. Cancelo and Phillips seemed to be constantly in each other's way. But it wasn't just to them. We were totally impatient. When the ball got up to Foden, he seemed desperate to immediately produce a one touch killer pass and lost possession There was none of that careful probing and controlling the ball.

Southampton played really well. Their pressing in midfield was excellent and they worked v hard. Deserved to go through.

Do feel a bit gutted to have sold Lavia for £15m, he clearly has a great future.

At times Pep at City reminds me of what Malcolm Allison was like second time around. Experimental line ups and tactics, which are great on a black board, but flawed in matches. It is happening too often, and he really should have learned after Porto. We cannot become a vanity project for Pep’s experimenting.
I think a strong assistant who will challenge Pep when he starts over thinking stuff is urgently needed. Fernandinho was a leader in the dressing room and would be a good candidate, but there are others.

Not the end of the world to go out of the LC. Something probably had to give this season considering the WC and tight schedule.

What is disappointing is the way we did it and that no one that had the possibility to show why they belong to a possible first 11 did it.

Then I can’t fathom why Mahrez was not playing. After the amazing game against Chelsea. Surely he doesn’t need any rest either as he was not in the WC. As much on Pep as the players this.

Cancelo form is ice cold and has been since the WC when he rightly so lost his place. Not sure he’s someone to get himself together and fight for a place either, time will tell.

We need Walker and Cancelo in good form if we want to win a big trophy this season.

Rico and Ake can do a job at FB, but they are not top FBs (yet). We can get away with them at FB vs average teams (we didn't vs Everton though, both did nothing in attack). But we will struggle vs Bayern or PSG, and it will be difficult vs Arsenal too. Guess Pep will try Walker and Ake vs United, and that's probably the best he can do right now for Cancelo is poor, but the build up play may be sterile and painful to watch.

Something happened between Pep and Cancelo, and the team is suffering from it. Pep should play him at LB again. After the WC, Cancelo has two starts from 6 games, both on the right side, and one as a winger. He won't regain form while competing for minutes with Walker and Rico at RB. Ake is not the solution for the whole of the 2nd half of the season. Gomez isn't the solution either.

not one for bagging the team
but when it gets this bad pep and the players have to be called out
i'm not going to single anyone out as all were bad in differing measures
the worst performance by a city 16 for years probably the worst under pep
i really hope it was a collective off night
the no 1 problem was ball retention, i've never seen us give the ball away as much
anything approaching that level on saturday and theyll be singing "you lucky bastards it should of been 10"
i'll admit i'm concerned

Cancelo is not a defender and will never be, his good performance is always linked to the support he gives to attack, not defense. He is always considered as one of the best left back not because of his defending skills but actually his key passes.

City should have a qualified professional left back who can defend, Gomez and Cancelo are not good for what City want to achieve.
