Southampton (A) - Post Match Thread

A bit of an iffy start but we got into the game quite well and by the end felt we probably should have won it. Give Southampton some credit though, tactically they were quite astute and well set up, but they still tried to have a go.

On the VAR calls.....KDB was fouled but I'm still not sure if it was on the line or just outside, just a bit amazed that the ref didn't blow for a foul whether it was in or outside the box. The incident with Laporte was a red card all day long. You can't have your boot that high and catch someone's thigh, glancing blow or not. It's dangerous play....and looking at the photo Laporte posted after the game it seemed more than a glancing blow to me. I sometimes wonder what on earth these Mr Magoo VAR people are watching. And don't get me going on the Palace v Liverpoool game yesterday....shocking.

A bit frustrated maybe with the draw but, keeping some perspective, if someone had asked me back on Oct 30th after the Palace game if I'd take 12 wins and a draw from the next 13 PL games, the answer would be yes absolutely.

We weren't at the races.

I've been his biggest fan on this forum over the course of the season, but Sterling had an especially poor game. He gave the ball away cheaply before their goal and missed an absolute sitter. He really should have been hooked at halftime.

Grealish also not delivering so far. I'll give him longer to settle in, but for £100m those are the type of games that you need to grab by the scruff of the neck and prove you're worth the big transfer fee.

Admittedly though, Southampton were very excellent. Very organised. Ran the clock down. They are probably the hardest team to break down in the league when they set up like that. Ward-Prowse is class. Having said all that though, they would have left the game feeling lucky to have won a point.

I've noticed Pep, often, doesn't sub the player I feel is having a bad one. He seems to give them every opportunity to redeem themselves, that shows trust imo. Grealish worked his socks off, ( as did Sterling). Pep respects that, which was reflected in his post match comments. Conversely, Klopp ,often, quite quickly makes the substitution - uses it punitively reflecting, imo, the bitter, harsh side of their thinking which they try to hide but characterises their approach imo.

Pep knows his stuff.

We won't mention the CL final, mind!

I thought Gundo might've been given some time in the Southampton game, seems to have fallen out of favour at the minute. Maybe he's taking longer getting over covid

Perhaps Pep doesn’t agree with your assessment of how well the player is performing. Thankfully ;)

Just watching the whole game back. Their goal – don't get me wrong, it's a great goal by Walker-Peters, he had to strike that just right to get past a keeper like Ederson from that angle. But Phil does definitely just let him go. I think Pep might have given him a bit of a bollocking for that.
Raz. Yes, Raz was poor. Ok, really poor. I wasn't quite so aware of it watching it live. I'd just like to remind people that he was head and shoulders MOTM against Chelsea, and has generally played really well in the last few matches. Let's keep a sense of balance.
My general feeling now is that Raz has given us very fine service, but that it might be good for his game and its development if he moved to one of the big European clubs. On the other hand, if he wants to stay, I'm good with that too!
