Spurs (A) - Post-Match Thread

We need some new characters. A bit of aggression, some anger, some passion. Too many shruggers or moany cnuts out there. Laporte, cancelo, bernado, Jesus, Rodri & kdb all just moan too themselves or the ref. Mahrez is a shrugger, he doesn't care, couldn't give 2 fcuks. Another shit pass by him led to their 2nd. How many goals have we conceded this season down to a lazy, over ambitious pass or shot leading to a counter attack by him. Does he say sorry, nope, does anyone bollock him, nope. Why does no one grip Eddie and say calm the fuck down. Dias and walker are genuinely the only ones who seem to be passionate. This is why Foden is needed, he cares. We've lost vinny, d.silva, hart, Delph, lescot, edin, tevez, yaya, zaba and others. Some don't have nowhere near the talent as current players but they had passion and drive. Could Doyle + passion be worse than gundo? What about delap + youthfull fearlessness, any worse than torres/sterling upfront and mahrez pondering around on the wing improving his YouTube compilations? Kdb is bollocksed play bernado/doyle and foden. Or at least bring subs on before 70 mins. Delap, palmer, doyle, braaf all look like they can help out, even add something different, use them ffs. We need 2 characters/big personalities bringing in. A zaba/tevez type, a true warrior leading by example, running through brick walls bandaged up. Also a vinny/delph type verbal leader. Dias maybe this player but we need more. Who do the players look too on the pitch too organise and gee up. Someone to tell mahrez to play it simple, tell rodri to play it forward faster, tell Phil to breathe and dictate play, organise the defensive line (drop if needed). We have talent, we have a great squad minus 1 mobile cdm and 1 1st team lb. Every other position we have 2 class players in each slot and a quality youth player backing them up. Let's face it, Phil would start in most prem teams. Doyle, tosin & delap would get plenty of 1st team minutes in bottom half clubs. Palmer, thb, f.nmecha and braaf would get time off the bench. They can do a job for us, some would add a different skill set than what we have. If not at least we get a bigger fee for them. Anyway, fcuk messi I want a lb, jay dasilva, Douglas Luiz, Marcos thuram and haaland. Mendy, gundogan, zinchenko, mahrez out and I'd happily swap bernado for aouar. Love bernado but he's not what we need. We need a player to dictate the pace of the game. Phil and Tommy aren't there yet!!!
 
We've got at least the second best squad in the league. Our tactical set up and attitude are making it much harder than it needs to be. Even all the scapegoats are a product of deliberate instruction:

Mahrez - over used as he's our second best chance creator statistically.
Gundogan - used to balance the midfield, not particularly defend or attack.
The high line - used to compress play, only really Walker is actually suited to it
Ederson - victim of the high line

The most effective play we ever had came from using Sane and Sterling on their natural wings, at speed. Since moving Sterling to the left, with inverted wingers every move funnels into packed boxes and we deny our forwards clear cut chances.

I wonder what sort of goal we actually expected to score today, in the face of entirely predictable tactics.

I agree. Too much shrugging. Revenge is best served cold like Carlos Tevez did.

We ain't going to have it all our own way indefinitely. The team in its various incarnations in the last 10 years, has given us more than we dreamed of. He inherited from Pellegrini and his best mate a squad with 4 full backs with a combined age approaching 140 and a past-it Yaya, so he gets a pass on that year tbf.
Since then, though, it’s all on him and his best mate. No excuses. Its their squad.
He has been handed perfect conditions that any other coach would dream of. Huge investment and a club he can shape as his own with zero internal pressure.
He can’t take credit for the successes without also taking responsibility for the failures. And for the last 18 months he has failed miserably.
Two legendary seasons but two absolute skip fires. And this one is already heading towards the latter rather than the former.
So I’m genuinely interested how the acolytes can defend this last 18 months

Seeing Mahrez in the team gave all the wrong signs out because he is incapable or raising his game with the same sub-standard performances, time after time. He needs to be sold in the transfer window imo.

Poor use of subs by Pep to introduce something different also was disappointing but not reallu unexpected.

Mourinho knows how to stifle opponents and Pep wasn't able to counteract the plan.

Very disappointing performance all-round and disturbing by the repetitive nature of events.

We drop or ignore energetic younger players too readily. We use substitutes far too sparingly. Looking ahead, we shouldn’t bust a bollock to retain the Micky Mouse Cup this season.

We also forget that there were no games for a couple of months. OK, not the same as pre-season prep but still a significant physical and psychological break in the otherwise relentless regime.

The number of internationals is just stupid. The authorities should have reduced them in the knowledge that the season would be compressed. Why didn’t clubs kick up more of a fuss? As it is, I expect more and more “injuries“ of the Bryan Riggs variety.

Very good point there, which is why I agree big part of this is also down to Guardiola. None of our fringe/young players stepped up, and reason is Pep just doesn't trust them. I think, in his head, if senior players don't perform then let them play more, even in easy games, until they get in some kind of rhythm. It's just not working.
The league will be very hard from here. Even if we find some kind of form, we just have so little energy for the long run to keep up the intensity of play
