Spurs (H) - Post-Match Thread

IMO this is a problem with the CB partnership. Laporte is slow and easily turned, we’ve seen that for a couple of years now, and the more Dias plays with him the more he seems to be trying to nip things in the bud like Otamendi used to.

Stones is much faster and more comfortable covering back and mopping up if that ball in behind is played, which is why he and Dias fit so well together as a pair.
Yep, i think Laporte makes Dias second guess him all game & his game suffers for it.
Dias knows he can attack the ball & has someone mopping up behind him if he misses when playing with Stones

Chelsea caused them all sorts of problems with set pieces too though nearly every goal they scored against them was a set piece. Our set piece deliveries yesterday were absolutely shocking.
We’re up there this season though for most set piece goals, yesterday was shit I agree.

The plan would involve not just the paper, board or iPad it's on, but some semblance of a plan that had a measure of practical deliverance. We were caught four times with our shorts by our ankles, and got stuffed on three of 'em! That's not much of a plan - I think Baldrick was doing the half time team talk! Being caught once in such circumstances yer can say hey ho, eez football, but three fuckin' times, and lastly on the last fuckin' minute is just crass and ramshackle.

It was a plan he said they worked on and that they knew of the danger Spurs posed. Do you really think Pep, the coaching team and the players didn't talk about it and plan to deal with it? Come on you're old enough to know they would have. As I said in my earlier post, knowing about a threat and stopping it are two different things. Every team would get a result against us if it was that simple.

Spurs played their best game of the season yesterday and a lot of our players were poor. Even so with a bit more luck we could also have won. A draw was a fair result and we had that until idiotic play and mistakes by some of our out of form players criminally cost us. Shit happens that's the first time we've lost since October.

Remember yesterday Romero got booked yesterday for holding onto Dias (before the corner was taken). What did we do then...Play it fucking short!! Why not put it in the box seen as the ref had eyes on Romero and could of got a penalty for Romero still not letting Dias go.
More frustrating that the ball was either not beating the first man or looping over everybody and going out for a goal kick.

Yeah, I don't mean it as a swipe at him. He's been one of our most consistent players this season, and if win silverware, which I think we will do, he will have played a major role.

It's such a complicated position in this team, so much goes through him that if he does have a bad day and/or the team isolate his passes he's going to struggle. That isn't his fault per se, though I do think yesterday was a mixture of both. But every team that has got at us this season has done so by targeting him.
Agree with all you said.

Having summoned up courage to watch the highlights on the City site, what was obvious is that Kane will never score two easier goals, he was given a free run for his first goal and he hardly had to jump for what turned out to be the winner. Both our full backs were poor, as were our centre backs. The line up v Sporting looks like our strongest, left back remains a conundrum. As for no recognised centre forward, it’s fucking us up. We haven’t come close to replacing Sergio.

Totally agree and he’s not the only one.

I also continue to believe Dias is being made to look completely ordinary by playing on the right of the pairing because Laporte is starting ahead of Stones.

It makes so much difference on having build up out on both sides.

I regularly get hammered for it, but De Bruyne is more of a liability when we are parked on the edge of the opponents' 18 yard box.

Would like to see Gundo get a run in the false nine.

The place will be an absolute bear pit on Saturday night. Tough game.
Always a tough game but recent results have been good.
Need a few players to find some form Bernardo, foden and Kdb
A Leeds win against Liverpool followed by us beating Everton and Chelsea winning the cup would be a good week!

Yes, and what is making it worse is that Dias is now doing the same thing, getting easily turned on the halfway line and making wrong offside decisions. Dias has been booked twice in our last 4/5 games early doors for getting too close to the attacker on the halfway line, getting beaten easily and having to foul their player.

A lot of folks saying , Trafford, Pool, Everton etc will follow suit, yes it’s possible, but the level of cynicism on display by Spurs plumbed new depths. Rangnick won’t do a Conte, nor will Lampard, even Bingo will have the arrogance to think he can go toe to toe, yes still pissed off but let’s keep things into perspective.

Infuriating to lose that game. A lifeline getting the penalty and then giving a goal away is just horrendous.

Doesn't help that defensively we played the worst we've ever played under Pep. Nobody played well and Rodri couldn't make simple passes.

Next two games suddenly very big.
MASSIVE

I appreciate how well we've done this season and last but I will be truly relieved when this whole false 9 experiment is over. We have so many world class players... it's inevitable that even without a true 9 we'll score goals... but we've gotten used to it. If we had a proficient finishing war head at the top of our attack, it'd change this team and the way opponents line up against us. I simply don't think we'll win CL this year as a result of our lack of striker and we'll scratch at this point to win the league. We're fortunate Liverpool haven't been their best this year while Chelsea have stuttered and ManUre have been impotent. I know it's a bit of a flap, but I'm so tired of what is essentially playing chess without a queen.

As it happens, i got up to make tea soon as the final whistle went.
I can tell you now that pulling a large, open, bag of frozen peas out of the freezer upside down can soon take your mind off a shit result..
Ha ha, bet you will be finding those all over the show for weeks now!

Yeah! It was a game that after five minutes I didn't think we'd win, but getting back to 2-2 on 92mins we should have copied exactly the tactics Spurs adopted throughout the game - five at the back, timewasting, feigning injury, et al, and we end up with a point. Every time Spurs got into our half it was invariably 2 or 3 versus 2 and we defended like headless chickens. Do that, and I suppose that's what you deserve. Fuck all!
Indeed. The result and performance were disappointing but in terms of levels of disappointment getting back to 2-2 and faffing it up in injury time tops the lot.
