Squeeze

Great lyrics that tell a story in a short song.

I never thought it would happen
With me and the girl from Clapham
Out on a windy common
That night I ain’t forgotten
When she dealt out the rations
With some or other passions
I said you are a lady
"Perhaps" she said "I may be".
We moved into a basement
With thoughts of our engagement
We stayed in by the telly
Although the room was smelly
We spent our time just kissing
The railway arms we’re missing
But love had got us hooked up
And all our time it took up.

I got a job with Stanley
He said I’d come in handy
And started me on monday
So I had a bath on sunday
I worked eleven hours
And bought the girl some flowers
She said she’d seen a doctor
And nothing now could stop her.

I worked all through the winter
The weather brass and bitter
I put away a tenner
Each week to make her better
And when the time was ready
We had to sell the telly
Late evenings by the fire
With little kicks inside her

This morning at 4:50
I took her rather nifty
Down to an incubator
Where thirty minutes later
She gave birth to a daughter
Within a year a walker
She looked just like her mother
If there could be another

And now she’s two years older
Her mother’s with a soldier
She left me when my drinking
Became a proper stinging
The devil came and took me
From bar to street to bookie
No more nights by the telly
No more nights nappies smelling

Alone here in the kitchen
I feel there’s something missing
I’d beg for some forgiveness
But begging’s not my business
And she won’t write a letter
Although I always tell her
And so it’s my assumption
I’m really up the junction
We sang that in the pub after we got back from the Stoke match in 98 where we were relegated to the third division. It was all good fun as we’d had a few drinks but the grim reality hit home on a sober Sunday morning. Great song and like a few Squeeze songs it’s a story as well as a tune b

Have to say Squeeze album East Side Story in 1981 must be one of the best albums ever made, every track brilliant. Produced by Elvis Costello too.
On your recommendation I’ve just bought this on Music Magpie through EBay for £4.19, a private seller had it up for over £17. I’ll put it on my ITunes and pass on to my Brother In Law so two of us get the album for a couple of quid each, cheers.

A brilliant, original song with great lyrics.
Not many songs do not have a repetitive chorus.
Every line is different, telling a proper story.
Saw Squeeze earlier this year at Kubix Festival near Sunderland.
Pissed down all day, getting drenched.
But Squeeze were superb, loads of top tunes with brilliant lyrics (Pulling Mussels, Cool for Cats etc.)...

Money well spent. All great tracks but special mentions to Piccadilly, F-hole, Someone else’s heart, Vanity Fair, In Quintessence, Heaven. But they’re all great

I’ve only got the Squeeze greatest hits album, for the price of a brew this will be a good addition to my music collection, ranges from the Sex Pistols, Clash, Frank Sinatra, Springsteen and the Grimethorpe Brass Band amonst many other artists.

Bump.
Just a quick heads up to any Squeeze fans on Bluemoon.
( I know there are quite a few of us on this forum).
It's their 50th Anniversary Tour next year.
They are playing at the 02 APOLLO on Saturday 12th October 2024.
Tickets go on sale this Friday 1st December at 10.00am.
I'll be buying a couple of tickets for me and the wife.
We've been to 4 or 5 Squeeze concerts in the 90s and 2000s and they are a great band to see live.
If you don't attend then all I can say is that
"You're really Up The Junction" !!!
Be ready to go at 10am tomorrow for decent seats, the O2 presale tickets went like hot cakes yesterday, many venues selling all presale tickets, managed to get a couple for the York gig. Saw them last around Christmas time 1991 in New Cross, fantastic gig.
