Stadium Expansion

I am middle aged, nowhere near being able to afford a season ticket, earning an average Uk wage, supported City for 42 years, would love to go as a fan, worked as a steward for 10 years to see the Blues.
There must be many in the 40-50 year old group who,due to economics in Uk,high taxes etc..have drifted away and watch it on TV mainly. These fans supported City in lower divisions and,if pricing was reduced, would consider going to the games again.

i remember Cyrille Regis scoring the only goal in a top flight game in Jan 1987 at Maine Rd v coventry after we had got knocked out of the Fa cup in round 3 and there were just over 18000 there I think !!

Cibaman, I don't see what the problem is with having a 60k stadium or whatever. What is wrong with a crowd, for example, of 52k in a 60 k capacity if it means 4000 more get in every game ? Surely we all remember the Maine Rd 'glory days' when we only used to fill the stadium twice a season for the derby and the occasional big game ! We used to get 30-35 k in a 50 odd thousand capacity stadium but there wasn't the hang up that some people on here seem to have that we MUST sell every seat every week. Look at Italy, the so called big clubs regularly play to half empty stadiums. Who cares !

The club are trying to build up the image of the club abroad. That might not appeal to many of our hard core traditional fans, but in future a huge chunk of our income will come from overseas. Until recently we were not that well known abroad, certainly not compared to United, Liverpool or Chelsea.

Creating an image of City as a "hot ticket" is an important part of the strategy. Full houses emphasise that, empty seats don't. If you're selling corn flakes then failing meet demand is criminal. But if you're buiding a fashionable brand then having some excess demand isn't a bad thing, at least in the short term.

I know in some countries gates are much more variable, supporters traditionally pick and chose their matches. But that it isn't the norm in England.

Have you seen and heard the amount of advertising that United are doing just now? I've heard numerous radio ads this week for their game against West Ham. The cost of those ads must be far greater than the income that they will bring in. But United know that the sight of empty seats at OT would be hugely detrimental to their image abroad. They cant afford to let that happen.

It may be shallow, but we'll sell more shirts in Japan if they see an image of a packed Etihad with 47,000 in it than a 60,000 seater stadium with 52,000 in it.

And by that theory we should in fact reduce the capacity to 35,000? There's nothing to back your theory up. The final game of the season and the derby at home were both major box office world wide and the ground was rammed each time. Winning trophies raises a clubs profile, not a packed stadium, because Fulham is usually packed as is QPR, as was Fratton Park.

I think some people overblow the whole sold out stadium thing. Barcelona average about 10-15k under capacity for most league games and it has no effect on their reputation and standing as one of the world's 'best' clubs. Same with Real Madrid and the two Milans.

In a year or two we will be ready for a larger stadium. Maybe we're even ready now. I just hope the club get the all the plans in place and are prepared so it doesn't drag on.

The bigger the stadium the more opportunity to sell more tickets for the big games, yes maybe it wont be full for the cup games especially earlier rounds but no stadiums are nowadays.

I think its been well reported on hear that our owners aren’t blown away with the current stadium, its nice but not the wow factor.
When they start the expansion they will want to put their own mark on it so we could see something special.

As far as making most if not all of the second tier into some type of corporate or semi corporate level, that will force out a lot of the fans on that tier, I’m not saying that this is a good thing as a lot of people wont want to move but their will be a lot of new seats available on the lower tier, some of them in prime areas eg the corporate areas at the back of the East and West stands.

Also the away fans area on the bottom and second tier will become available as you can bet that the away fans are going to be stuck up on the third tier

I want 100,000 seater if we could.

I don't give a shit about empty seats. Why have a 50,000 seater when your top games could sell 70,000 tickets? What's the point? It's throwing money away.

the empty seat shit has come about cause it's the only thing the rags can now throw at us now

how times have changed :)

I agree, if it's feasible to build a giant stadium expansion, do it and wait for the people to come rather than extending again in future. In the meantime just drape some giant club commissioned City themed banners/flags over the top seats or something, it'd be a great visual.

For what its worth. I think expansion is needed sooner rather than later.
6,000 extra seats on the top of south stand is just what the doctor ordered.
Firstly, away fans (upto 3000) put in south east corner 3rd tier, easy access and egress to car park, pc plod happy.
Secondly, cheaper seats for the boys on level one and everyone back together as one big family. Always full due to lower prices and no away fans on show.
And finally, tier 3, will be more expensive for away bods and anyone who wants to glory hunt on big nights like Wednesday. Instead of sitting next to me and wetting their knickers every time Ladyboy got the ball.
I could have said something, but my Cantonese is a bit rusty.
And for those who don't sing, I can just about live with that. But, the arses who cant put their hands together now and again. You can watch most matches on the internet nowadays.

Most people who work can aford to go to the odd games if they chose to do so charging £10 less wont make much difference you either want to go or you dont
