Stalybridge

Fox tavern at the end of Darnton Rd. The Rd I grew up on.
Decent boozer in the 70s.
Supposed to be haunted, if you believe in that shite.
I did hear that tale believe an Horrendous Spectre use to prowl the rooms after dark but not been seen in donkey's years, just when did you depart for the colonies. :-)

Is the Old Fleece still there? Was opposite the Cinema. Spent many a happy night in there in the 80's and 90's and even worked behind the bar for extra beer tokens, which I largely gave straight back to the landlord, for a short time
Yes it is!

The original Rifleman is now flats. The new Rifleleman was called Bar Max in the days before the town was dubbed 'Stalyvegas'. It is on the corner opposite to where the Rose and Crown Used to be. Next to that is Q Bar. The town is renowned for having the longest and shortest pub names in the British isles.
Stalybridge is also famous for the song 'A long way to Tipperary', which was written by a local lad.
It is the 2nd most sung song after 'Happy Birthday to you'.
You can't enter Staly without either going under or crossing a bridge.

They have some great places to eat now

Gladstone’s does a bloody superb breakfast

Deli Felice is great

Greek Chippy does the best Gyros

Saleems do a superb kebab, as do Tokies

There is a greggs

The spoons is decent enough

They did have a shit Christmas tree though
I tried Gladstones this morning for a full breakfast and was really impressed, very tasty. Not cheap though at just over a tenner but top quality ingredients never are. I highly recommend it. 9/10.

I lived up ridge hill from 85 to 89
We used to go in the fox sometimes
I heard it became a bit of a City supporters pub mid 90's
and a coach load of mibs turned up on a derby day before the game
and attacked everyone inside,kids,old,young etc

my mate lives on Darnton road facing the hospital now.
