Sterling’s contract - three year extension confirmed

Sadly, it's considerably more than that already, hence City don't really have much wiggle room, outside of causing a future stampede.

Raheem turned down £110k a week to stay at Liverpool, so it gives you an idea how much we pushed the boat out the first time.

For context (I can't really say how I know) Sane earns £65k a week, which wasn't too shabby for a kid and his previous wages at Schalke, but if he's to be commensurate with his current valuation, it about a third of where he needs to be just to match Raheem's current salary.

And this is without the fantastic bonuses City pay to keep basic salaries within limits.
Obviously a difficult question to answer but based off what you know, do you think an agreement will be reached or do you forsee us having to sell?

I suspect what his agent was hoping for was that Sterling would have an outstanding World Cup and thus be in a position to really push for a huge rise, hence the delay. Fair enough too, but while he did fine, and a lot better than people gave him credit for, it didn't strengthen his negotiating hand.

I daresay there will be an agreement, and he'll get a pay rise plus lots of incentive bonuses to allow it to be painted as either £300k a week or £200k a week depending on who is talking about it.

It's just kicking the can down the road, seemingly, though?

Raheem will have to continue to progress at a major rate of knots for any other club to be interested in the future, willing to meet wages only the very elite can get near unless they become a free transfer.

City need to protect the asset, that much is clear, but I can see why we don't want to make a rod for our own backs on a number of fronts, whether that be other players using Raheem's new wages as a negotiating ploy of their own, Raheem losing form/becoming disenchanted should Pep leave.

We have numerous painful examples already of players we have signed or retained (Adebayor/Nasri/Hart) where their salaries become prohibitive to realising a fee of any sort.

So the question is, do City feel they will find themselves in a similar situation in three years time, or is Raheem totally committed to the cause and improving to the elite level of performer?

Fair questions, and I don't have a clue. I would say that there's no evidence of agitating for a move, nor that his agent is touting him to other clubs, which implies (no more than that) that there's no desire to go elsewhere.

I certainly see an agreement, and soon - we can't allow the outside to make it bone of contention more than they are already trying to do so - he's worth too much to us in the current market to not compromise somewhere in the next few weeks, even if this means paying him what his agent wants now, taking a short-term financial hit, but selling him next summer.

That's obviously an extreme example, so City will obviously be crunching the numbers to see how we come out ahead.

I quite like Raheem's confidence in a blue shirt. He's affecting big games for us now and has a great understanding with all the players. Take yesterday, scored another important goal. Showed versatility on the left. Even cracked out a few showboats later in the match. He's definitely in a good place here. He's also home grown which we'd have trouble replacing that level of ability from the other homegrown players available. He's a year older than Sane, but seems to apply himself so much better to the work ethic Pep demands. Yes, Sane might be a future star too, but Raz can come back from the WC and do that, yet, Sane has the summer off and just like last season, hasn't hit the ground running )2 seasons like that now). I know by Christmas he'll be on all cylinders but he needs to match Raheems determination.

I think this will end well. Raheem will have a good season, sign a deal that's above what we wanted to pay, but is nearer to his earning ambition.

Obviously want him to stay but not at the expense of paying stupid wages. Players already earn a stupid amount and if he is just after stupid money then let it be known he is available to buy in January and ship him out. We want players committed to playing for the club not a bank balance...

If he's already on £195k/week, and surely City are offering him an increase, but wants ~250k/week then I don't see how they can be that far apart.

I don't like this growing false narrative concerning Sane. In his first season he was a kid with a hamstring issue when he first arrived. Last summer he had an operation on his nose to help alleviate some breathing problems he had.

This season, the manager gave him an extra week off to just get his head right after the World Cup snub and has been carrying a slight knock.

It seems even some City fans are buying into the suggestions now that Sane is too big for his boots and needs bringing down a peg or two, caused trouble in the Germany squad.

As you say, he'll be firing on all cylinders soon but make no mistake, there's nothing really sinister going on, as there wasn't with Stones last year when he was sidelined after an injury.

Sane is the jewel in our crown after KDB and if it was a toss up between who will go on to become an elite world-class consistent performer between Raheem and Leroy, I would back Ze German every time.

An extra £100k a week is an extra £5m a year? That's a lot. I suspect it is all about keeping things under control. As I say, City bonuses are phenomenal as it is.

It will get done, you always meet somewhere in the middle.

Who said 100k/week?

The line is he wants £250k/w like Aguero and De Bruyne.

You're saying he's already on £195k/w, so even if City are offering only a 10% bump in his current deal (to ~215), there's a 35 grand a week difference, not 100.

For the gap to be so huge, either we're paying our top earners far more than reported in the press, or he's not earning that much currently.
