I’m sure Raheem will be able to clear up any doubt when he gives his statement. And he should be taken most seriously as he doesn’t appear to be in the habit of throwing accusations around or generally gobbing off.

On the contrary, he doesn’t court publicity and has accepted loads of unwarranted flak without complaint.

As far as I’m concerned it’s impossible to debate racists. You can tell them to shut up, you can ban them from football stadiums, you can arrest them, it still won’t stop them voting for the BNP or hurling racist abuse on national television. Neither will giving them a swift fist to the jaw, but it’ll leave more of a mark and it’ll embarrass them enough to make them think twice about behaving like that again.

I hate racism. I also hate a society which does not allow people to express their views even if it is hateful. I think the ideal way of us dealing with racism and views like it are for people to challenge this ideology instead of running to the Police and papers every time it happens. Ultimately it is the authorities who send people to war and much of modern racism in Britain is now centred on Islamophobia which was generated by the wars in the Middle East. We are getting into a very authoritarian society where everyone wants to censor everything. That is no way to gain freedom. What happens is that gradually the centre ground shifts and alien views of any description are outlawed.

People think that racism has disappeared from football. It hasn't. Just racists keep quiet most of the time. Would I rather they voice their opinion next to me, no? But driving it underground is no answer either.

Anyone that thinks hes saying “manc” is naive or worse, willing to try to excuse the act.
The guy is racist, simply, and no he wont do it on the street, but football brings out the primitive side of a lot of people and its shocking to see.
The biggest problem is that it is not just one fan, and we need to stop acting like it is. Singular banning orders are the least to expect, but it is soon forgotten and then a few weeks later it happens again and again.
Its a huge section of society and as a young person in this country growing up in a muti cultural school, uni, workplace I can not understand how views like this can still be held.
Good on sterling for calling this out. He may end up carrying the fight unfortunately in a way kaepernick has in the US, but I feel it needs a person of his standing to bring this into mainstream media for discussion.
Without it, we’ll be having the same discussions, deploring the same actions from people for years and years to come.
