Sunderland (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

You're not being serious there, surely.
Yes it was slightly tongue in cheek. But Ali joined us at the back end of his career. Ryan is young and inexperienced in the PL. If he has the same impact on the team as Ali did, he'll do for me. And don't call me Shirley

Just got home from the game. I thought we were good today and it was an enjoyable game to watch. I thought all the starting 11 played well. Really impressed with Nico O'Reilly again today, he's developed into one of the best full backs in the PL in my opinion.
According to some plank on here not long ago O'Reilly never be good enough to be a first team regular.

I's like to see a bit more of Lewis, who almost seems to have been forgotten recently so god to see him back on the pitch today.

Anyone know if Khusanov is injured? I expected him to be a regular in this team rebuild.

A couple of seasons ago, we played Brentford twice in the space of 15 days, and while we won there at a relative canter, it was a much cagier and dour affair in Manchester. It was the same when we used to get repeat replays in the FACup; players quickly become accustomed to and remember how their opponent will play. I just prefer to have longer between meetings.
I think Sunderland have had a decent start, as one newly promoted team often does, but I don't think it will last. I believe we'll be too strong for them, not an easy place to go though and it's the same for our rivals.

Good win again (all wins are good), but after starting weakly, I thought from 20 minutes on the performance was good too, and we saw out a game well after the third, unlike the chaos of midweek.
Think the first 30 mins was a bit frustrating. The lads worked very hard to win the ball back but the crossing was poof anc every time Doku, Cherki or Foden tried to quicken thongs up with cute reverses, 1-2s etc, nothing worked.
And then the Reuben magic and we were on our way.
After that, some really great stuff including that outstanding Gigi save.
Cherki was ghd icing on the cake and NOR excellent again

In the pub before the match I was very worried about today. I needn't have been. We controlled it throughout and didnt really give them a sniff ( bar a brain fart from Dias) Yet again chances went begging, in the first half we had 4 beautiful crosses into the box but no one there but a solid, in control performance

I agree completely

That's.why I used the phrase "reasonably comfortable" as I remember one defeat in particular (funnily enough at Sunderland) in 2011-12 where I still wonder how the fuck we lost.

I was also at Elland Road in 00-01 when the reverse happened
Usually the best team wins but not every time.
You'll always get that though. I remember a cup match at Notts County where we played them off the park with something like 30+ chances. They won 1-0 with their only effort.

We've also had a couple v Southampton in more recent times where they've got a late winner on the break after hammering them all match.

I believe we're better than a lot give us credit for, because most other teams don't have to play against a 10-man wall week in week out, yet year after year we've done it and mostly got the win. It's all about getting enough. I also think we'll get better as the players get used to each other more, but some of the newer (Khus, Ait Nouri, Marmoush) players need game time too as we'll need them as the season progresses.

I also think Liverpool will come again too, I'm assuming they won today (watched it up to 2-0), and Isak and/or Salah are going to click at some point.

A lot of the doubt at the moment, especially from the naysayers, I think is because they don't see a team that will get 90-100 points and they're probably right, but there's no other team currently capable of reaching that target either. As I mentioned earlier, Liverpool's final points tally last season wouldn't have been enough to finish above us in our last 6 previous title wins.

By the time we go to the SOL, I think about 8 of their team will be away at AFCON
Yes exactly, I think it's 4 or 5 but even a couple of players can make a difference. Either way, we're a better side than they are, we're not going to win every match but neither are our rivals and I think we'll improve as the season progresses.

A timely boost to City from Cherki. I did think he made the wrong choices at time but there's no question he is a very talented player.

I thought he played very well on the right in the 2nd half and that bodes well for City as we've been a little weak as a team on the right.

Played ok, too slow but we had more control so that’s the main positive. If we can cut out the stupid mistakes and be a bit quicker we could be on the right track. Cherki is amazing, he looks slow but is deceptively quick, his vision and skill are a joy to watch. Glad the player got sent off for that awful challenge, was expecting it not be referred to the screen and I hope Nunes is ok.
Donna is pretty good as well
If 2nd in the league, 2 points behind "runaway leaders" Arsenal, quarter finals of the League Cup and top 8 of the Champions League isn't "on the right track" then I don't know what is.

Most other teams don't have to play 2 matches a week for virtually the entire season. If we try and play at 100mph all season we'll burn out. Ask Arsenal.

I wasn't a huge fan of Pep's interview tbh. I thought he was trying to encourage players to play with more freedom? Asked a question about Cherki's talent for the goal and answered that Dias's goal was good then rambled on about Messi. Wtf?
Are you sure you didn’t watch a bad edit?

In the interview I watched, Pep likened Cherki to Messi — not just in talent but in what he said was the more important attribute of doing the simple things perfectly. “Exceptional skills; huge talent; gave us continuity (he may have meant ‘control’); self confident; something special in the final third” was how he complimented Cherki in that response. He added that he’d never even seen Messi cross the ball the way Cherki did today. I’m certain Cherki would consider that high praise.

There was no mention of the Dias goal, nor did I think his answer to be rambling.

Really enjoyed today and judging by the players expressions as they went to each stand they felt it went very well.
Just one game but thought there was some great chemistry there today.

Watching game of the day on sky as I missed the game. Cherki is a maverick, his weakness? He's French so will be a bit of a pain from time to time but we all love a maverick.
I suppose KDB had that in him, Elano Bernarbia kinky. That assist pure entertainment, a joy.

Then Pep comes out, oh no need for that, cross it simple, Messi didn't need to do that.

Christ sake you're brilliant but do you need to suck the joy out of players, fans don't just want by the numbers. Maybe big him up ffs.

Can only presume we’re deliberately packing the six-yard box when defending corners. Seems a bit dangerous, though, to leave a player free in the box to control, shoot, and hit the post. Not sure we need them all so tightly packed in that space.
