Terrorist attack on asylum centre

Fair play to these for giving the refugee’s support!
What is strange is, there was a video amongst the comments of a gentleman at a “Refugee Welcome” march.
He asked around 15-20 of these protesters and asked nicely “would you adopt a refugee?”
The responses were laughable as each one said one of the below…..
I’m renting, i can’t!
No room at my house!
No!
The interviewer ended with “so it’s somebody else’s problem” to which every one of them agreed!
What i’m trying to put across is
1) They are protesting this cause but do not have the answers
2) This video has now been taken down for nobody else to see - why is this?

I wish we could just build another 30,000 homes/flats and settle them poor families but could the government afford this, if so where would you build them?
I know friends who have been on the council housing list for years - would you home refugee’s before people on the housing list?

It’s such a delicate subject and a hard one to figure out which is best result for everyone.
The problem is we can't just build 30,000 homes and then expect local areas to cope with it. There needs to be a measured approach across the country which includes housing as part of investment in healthcare, education and so on. Without this we'll just lurch to more and more people boarding a sinking ship. Immigration is needed but it's common sense that it's definitely not needed in areas which are swamped with people and can't cope with more.

The second issue is the politics because virtually everyone wants something done but absolutely no-one wants to be the one who does it. You can bet that if they said some portion of 30,000 houses were going up locally then most people will be against it. This becomes prohibitive for councils who suddenly could make one bad decision and then face the prospect of being thrown out of power.

A great example is I live in a Labour council. Planning permission recently went up for a new development near me and the council rejected it but the government intervened and overturned the decision. So Labour councillors came out talking up brown envelopes, corporate greed and how Labour apparently will stand up to greedy developers etc etc. But then the week after, Labour politicians will literally stand in Parliament and say that not enough houses are being built.......

Personally I think the simple answer to most problems actually is to remove government power from the issue and leave it to independent, unelected, non-political decision makers. The NHS would benefit because if the NHS can justify requirements for funding then it would be given it because it's a health service and not an accountant's wet dream. It's the same for the trains here with Avanti who are on their arse but no-one is interested because it isn't a big political issue and it isn't in London. So we'll have to keep this issue and shocking train services until someone decides to be interested which is usually just before we decide not to elect them.

Unfortunately the country is rotting away because no-one in politics is prioritising people or problems. All they care about, all of them, is their own arses. Look at Matt Hancock and Boris, they lost their power and now they're instead fancying moneymaking holidays during work hours..... It's a complete joke and the whole system is asleep at the wheel because 99% of the effort in politics is being put into arguing over who gets to drive.

Youtube “has the uk got enough rooms for refugees”

In the video he is called Right Wing, Nazi etc…for asking a simple question

Sometime’s its impossible to talk about immigratiom without personal abuse (like on this thread)

This is such a load of bollocks and used as a shit gotcha by people who haven't got a clue as to how much effort goes into rehousing refugees. The question to ask is "would you be willing to increase your taxes in order to pay for the services required by refugees" not "go on then, would you have one living in your kitchen".

It isn't about adoption, most are adults. Most children are with their parents so adoption isn't an issue, and most households in the UK are not in a position to adopt anyone, but it has never been about adoption in any way.

Asylum Seekers have no recourse to public funds, so it isn't legal for them to access social housing. If they have a positive decision, they are automatically made homeless, for some there will be a duty for the Council to assist them to find accommodation, others won't be accommodated.

Just a small (but IMO important) point @Moderating Team can we change the title of this thread to "...attack on asylum centre", given that's what the place in Manston is actually called and what it's for - people trying to claim asylum, not migrants.

Yes, it's so moronic and ignorant.

People fostering or hosting individuals or families always want to know something about them.

Bit of a nonsensical argument that, tbf. It's possible to protest against the inhumane treatment of refugees whilst being unable or unwilling to "adopt" a refugee yourself, for whatever reasons. The onus is on the government to find solutions to the current problem, not individuals.

It may be delicate, but it isn’t hard. The UK economy needs a constant influx of immigrants to function. It has done for well over a century, and right now the need for immigrants in many sectors, health, hospitality etc is acute.

We need more people, we especially need people of working age and this need will become greater the more our age demographic gets older.

We are competing with every other developed economy for labour, so I suggest the UK quits whining about immigration and gets competing.
So much wrong with this post.

Unfortunately I can't reply because I have full house, what with accommodating half-a-dozen refugees, a homeless family, three tramps and two battered women.

Maybe I should have left that all to professionals...
So much wrong?
Like what - nobody having an answer to the problems?
Of you would like to provide is all with the answer?
I would say the obvious answer is to build more homes - this would surely help the situation and get them out of the hotels/immigration centres

I've given you the answer. Leave it to professionals.

Like we do for every other group in need.

Some of the refugees will have never lived in accommodation with electric and gas, and not know how to access services or speak basic English.

They can't just be plonked with a house.
And when they get £40 a week and have no recourse to public funds, they would soon be in debt and starving.

Would you agree the answer is to build more homes? That’s the answer so why can’t we?

I think the obvious answer is not to make people wait 6+ months without being allowed to work.

At the very least we could introduce a temporary work visa for asylum applicants that allows them to contribute to the economy, pay a % of the cost of housing them (even if it's just food), and allow people to save up some money while they wait for their application result - either to start them on their way in the UK or find somewhere else to go if they're rejected.
