Bob,

Please, please, please do not send any letters. You might think it's a noble, polite thing to do, but in reality it's just one more doomed attempt by you to win her back by making her and her parents swoon at how nice and sweet and wonderful you are. It won't work, it's over. I'm sure they already think you are perfectly nice, sweet and wonderful. In fact, if anything, they probably think you're a bit too nice, sweet and wondeful, so just leave it out and stop torturing yourself.

I've been there and done all this shit, so please don't repeat my past mistakes. I'm in my 30s now and cringe at how soppy I was when my first girlfriend finished with me when I was 18. I'm sure I probably thought a letter would be a good thing back then, but now I realise she will have got it and thought "FFS, I wish this soppy **** would get the message and just fuck off now." That's if she even bothered to read it, which she probably didn't.

She's made her decision, so respect it and just leave her alone. The whole offer of 'let's still be friends' is just her trying to be nice to you cos she thinks it's what you want to hear and might ease your pain a little. But it won't, and deep down she probably doesn't really want to see or speak to you again as she's got a new life to be getting on with. And so have you. Neither of you need the other getting in the way of that happening, cos that's all you will do.

The other bit of advice I would give you is to do something, anything. Just keep yourself occupied, and make full use of your mates; this is exactly the situation they were invented for. I moped around in self pity for a couple of weeks and then jibbed it to Brussels with some mates for Euro 2000. A week of extremely heavy boozing, watching loads of football, getting caught up in riots every time we turned a corner, being tear gassed for no reason whatsoever, seeing England beat Germany and then watching Phil Neville knock us out all helped take my mind off things, and I returned home determined to get on with a new life that didn't include her.

Get yourself out and about with your mates and start having some fun. That's the only way to get over these things.

Pretty much this, only thing I can think is a worse idea than you sending her a letter is if you have posters on BM contribute one sentence each to a letter and send her the unabridged version.

After reading your post, Dubai, I think I'll just send a note with her stuff.

'Thanks for everything, I love you still and what we had was great, but I think it's best we never talk again if I'm going to be happy in the future. Goodbye, good luck.'

Get her stuff on eBay mate. Sod sending it back.

You've had a load of good advice on here mate. No letter needed, no pining required. You're a young lad and seem an intelligent one as well, so you've got plenty of things to look forward to in life.
