I hate to be a pedant, but I assume this thread title means "alternative"?

On this side of the Atlantic, "alternate" (as an adjective) means "every second one", as in I work alternate weekends", i.e. Saturday the 1st, the 15th, and the 29th.

England for the English, and their language, not for the admission of creeping Americanisms.

Nothing personal, but I think it should be pointed out, even if by a pedant.
