Congradulations to the New IBF Champion Carl Frampton winning the title by points against Kiko Marthinez. Marthinez is 1 tough hard man. Frampton had him down in 5th round but Marthinez got back up and boxed on to the end. Shocked Marthinez wasnt stopped in the 12th as he took some punishment. Frampton a World Champion I knew from the begining that this lad was going to be a world title champion. Seeing him boxing as a am to a pro he is destined to go on and fight big big big fights. Roll on a mega fight with Santa Cruz sometime in early 2015 then a fight with Rigondeaux would be great too. I know the Hearns will want a fight with Quigg but I cant see that happening for some time. As Carl will want the bigger pay and money and I cant see it happening for a while still. The good times are back in Irish boxing.
Also just heard that Framptons deal with Boxnation is now over I wonder if Sky will come back in for Frampton and do a deal to get him back on Sky. Loved what Carl had to say about Scott Quigg and he wants the fight but Hearn needs to know that Carl is the 1 with the real World title belt. He wants to fight anyone Carl he is going to be a brilliant exciting fighter to watch and hopefully Sky do a deal with Frampton for his fights.
As a Quigg fan (purely because he's a local lad and a nice guy to chat to as well), I thought that was a top performance last night from Frampton. Martinez is pretty limited but he's tough as they come and Carl had to show many dimensions to his ability last night to keep himself ahead in the fight, the knockdown was a beautifully picked shot and a fair summary of how cleanly he was able to counter punch Martinez all night long. I was praying for the ref to jump in in the 12th as I bet on Frampton KO but in any case, that was a world class 12-round performance from Frampton and I can't wait to see him in with the other top guys in the division now.
As for the Quigg fight if it were to ever happen, heart says Quigg but head leans slightly towards Frampton but I think it would be much more of a chess match. Quigg is pretty tight defensively and barely wastes a punch so Carl would have to work a lot harder to find a home for his counter shots than he did last night. I think they're very evenly matched in terms of ability but Carl just looks to have that edge in power. I think it's a tough one to call to be honest. No doubt people will call on the fact that Quigg has been put down a couple of times as a pro and claim he is chinny but he has never really been hurt badly and always found a way to win. Since winning his world title he's not really been matched with the best operators so I think we are a long way from seeing the best that Quigg has to offer.
I just hope it doesn't come down to who is percieved to be the bigger draw and the fight is shelved because of some shitty dispute over purses, split of tv revenue etc. Yes, Frampton is the bigger draw probably but in Ireland he has little competition for that title. Fact is this fight would sell anywhere in the UK so hopefully money won't completely dictate the negotiations and we will eventually get this fight made.
For the time being though, fantastic newsfor British boxing to have 2 domestic lads holding world titles.
