The Boxing thread

I remember Hagler ripping Alan Minter to shreds at Wembley Arena, and bottles and cans being thrown into the ring by the the pro-Minter crowd. Disgraceful scenes...

Hagler was an awesome boxer.

He was utterly brilliant as well as being a granite chinned hard man. That was a shameful night for British boxing, however.

That's why I called him a boxer, not just a fighter. Don't get me wrong; he could stand toe to toe and have a tear up with anyone. But he was also a master tactician. He probably doesn't get the praise he warrants, due to being around at the same time as Leonard and Hearns (boxers) and Duran (streetfighter).

He was as good as anyone and transcended the sport for more than a decade. That was an iconic period in boxing and we forget names like Salvador Sanchez, Wlfredo Gomez, Wilfred Benitez, Aaron Pryor, and Larry Holmes, who all deserve a place in the folklore of the sport.

Hagler was my favourite Boxer of them all.
Remember as a 12 yr old boy watching him destroy Alan Minta and thinking this guy is awesome.
My all time favourite too. An old school throwback who paid his dues, was avoided for years but still ruled the world though sheer force of will.
And I will take the fact he was robbed against Leonard to my grave

depends how you score boxing, robbed in that he kept going forward but landed far less punches than Leonard? Sure Leonard never hurt Hagler but its pretty hard to score that fight differently.

Depends how you look at boxing.
If the fight is tight i would look at the aggressor, the man who wants to fight.
But also i know people would score it to the man who would rather not fight and move all night.

Sugar Ray was the fans and media darling and i knew at the time Hagler would be in trouble if it went to the judges.
But for what its worth i still believe Marvin won the fight regardless

Leonard took the first half and Hagler the second so it was always in the balance going to the cards, Don’t mind either way how people scored it but the 118-111 was a scandal

Leonard hadn’t been in a ring for 3 years and came back in this first fight moving up in weight to fight a living legend in Hagler so if you think he won or lost the credit he gets from me for the performance alone is huge
